E3-2000 series L71 set
Pre-production set
Background and overview
JR East developed Shinkansen high-speed train type, E3-0 series, built for "Komachi" services with the coinciding the opening of the new Akita Shinkansen, which is regauged from a regular 1,067mm (3 ft 6 in) narrow gauge line to 1,435mm (4ft 8 in) standard gauge, and delivered a five-car preproduction set in 1995. This set consists of 4 powered vehicles and 1 trailer vehicle.

Car body
They incorporate aluminum alloy construction for anticorrosion and light wight. They built to a smaller loading gauge than mainline Shinkansen trains have 20,000mm (intermediate)/22,825mm (end) long body. End section features curved skin and reduces the sudden change of cross-sectional area to take measures for the piston effect and wind noise. Tokyo side end vehicles, class E311, are equipped with a retractable nose-end coupler to enable running in conjunction with a E2 or 200 series train set. A cluster of head lights and taillights are fitted above the windscreen and extra HID lights are fitted below the windscreen. Class E311 and class E326 vehicles are equipped with an 860mm wide sliding plug door and small fixed windows aligned each seat. The others are equipped with a 700mm wide door and small windows. Because of the narrower body compared to other shinkansen trains, doorway steps fold out to bridge the gap between the narrow body and the platform at regular shinkansen stations. LED destination indicators fitted on the body side display the destination and train type/seat type alternately. Equipments fitted under the floor are covered the side panels and under panels to prevent snow from infiltrating. They are equipped with two air conditioners, AU217, rated at 19,000kcal/h under their floor. Enlarged hood between vehicles covering the entire space and fairings covering a current pickup and insulators are fitted to reduce environmental noise. Current pickup fairings have movable fences raised up by the pneumatic cylinder to reduce airflow against the current pickup for environmental noise reduction while running on the shinkansen track. The current pickup fence located on class E329 vehicles does not have movable fences because E329 vehicles have a current pickup used for the conventional line section. Their livery is ceramic white and metallic gray with vivid pink lining.

Bogies
They are equipped with DT207 bogies on the powered vehicles and TR7005 bogies on the trailers, featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension and parallel leaf spring type journal box supporting system. Their bogies incorporate the single link traction device. The wheel diameter is 860mm and their wheelbase is 2250mm, shorter than regular shinkansen bogies for use on both Shinkansen and conventional rail. These bogies adopt the yaw dampers to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 275km/h. Westinghouse-Natal drive is applied for power transmission device. The gear ratio is 3.04 to get the maximum service speed at 275km/h. Powered bogies incorporate sanding devices for slip prevention on graded route. Brake rigging is the hydraulic pressure facing caliper wheel disk brake device.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Powered vehicles are equipped with a traction system, CI5, consisting of a PWM converter employing Gate turn-off (GTO) thyristor and a Variable-frequency drive (VFD) employing GTO thyristor. This traction system controls 4 AC asynchronous traction motors, MT205, with a power output of 300kW on vehicle basis. Class E326 and E322 vehicles are also equipped with a traction transformer, TM211, under their floor. Class E311 and E325 vehicles are equipped with a motor driven screw air compressor, MH1114-TC2000A, under their floor. Class E329 vehicles are equipped with two ancillary power units (APU), SC206, with a power output of 77kVA under their floor. These APUs convert 400V single-phase electricity from the third wiring of TM211 into 100V single-phase and 100VDC. Class E325 and E326 vehicles are equipped with a cross-arm current pickup, PS9034, for the Shinkansen section on their roof. Class E329 vehicles are equipped with a cross-arm current pickup, PS204, for the conventional rail section on their roof. They feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake and holding brake.

Accommodation
All seats are adjustable reclining which is auto rotatable to shorten standing time. 1st class vehicles have 2+2 abreast seating with 1160mm seating pitch to prevent seating capacity from decreasing caused by small passenger cabin, because class E311 vehicles have a long nose end section located toward front of the vehicle, a conductor room, a multi-purpose room, a catering room, toilets, and a washroom located toward rear of the vehicle. Standard class vehicles also have 2+2 abreast seating with 980mm seating pitch (reserved car) and 910mm (non-reserved car). Their seating is supported by a center leg to widen the leg room. 1st class cabin is equipped with reading lights and outlets of spot air conditioning under the luggage rack. They adopt free stop roller blinds. Class E311, E329, and E325 vehicle are equipped with a Western style toilet, a flashing urinal, and a washroom located toward rea of the vehicle. A toilet of class E311 is universal access. Class E326, E329, and E322 vehicles are equipped with a telephone room having a payphone designed to use a pre-paid card. The control desk of the driver's cab is equipped with three liquid crystal displays showing the speed meter, the pressure gauge, and the other information instead of analogue indicators.

Extensive testing
A pre-production set of E3-0 series was undergoing high-speed running testing, environmental testing and endurance running from March 1995.

Modification
They were modified to full-production specifications in March 1997 ahead of the start of Akita Shinkansen services. Current pickups, PS9034, were replaced with single-arm current pickups, PS206, which can be used on both Shinkansen and conventional rail sections. A current pickup for conventional rail section, PS204, was removed. Current pickup fairings having movable fences were displaced with insulator fairings. An additional trailer intermediate vehicle, class E328, was inserted to form a 6-car set.

-0 subseries mass production set
Background and overview
Mass-production sets of E3-0 series began to be delivered based on the result of test of pre-production set in 1996. 15 five-car sets consisting of 4 powered vehicles and 1 trailer vehicle over the period from October 1996 until February 1997.

Car body
They differ visually from pre-production set with having the end section design featuring headlight array located below the windscreen, wedge shape nose to reduce environmental noise and piston effect, and the windscreen featuring chemically strengthened glass. Current pickup fairings having movable fences were changed into fixed insulator fairings.

Bogies
They are equipped with DT207A bogies on the powered vehicles and TR7005A bogies on the trailers, featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension and parallel leaf spring type journal box supporting system. Their bogies incorporate the single link traction device. Current pickups were changed into single-arm current pickups, PS206, which can be used on both Shinkansen and conventional rail sections. A current pickup, PS204, which class E329 vehicles are equipped with for conventional rail section was discontinued.

Accommodation
Spot air conditioning outlets of 1st class were discontinued. The western style toilet employs the vacuum toilet system, although pre-production set employs the chemical holding tank.

Additional delivery
An additional 6-car set was delivered to provide additional capacity for services. At this time, an additional trailer intermediate vehicle, class E328, was introduced to form a 6-car set. In addition, insulator fairings which class E329 and E328 vehicles are equipped with on their roof were discontinued. Furthermore, train sets built over the period from 2002 until 2005 have some improvements over previous train sets. Their reaction system was changed into CI12 employing insulate gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). Active suspensions were introduced for end vehicles and semi-active suspensions were introduced for the others. This makes their bogies be classified into DT207B and TR7005B. They also introduced minor improvements including a door chime and hand-grabs on the edge of aisle seats.

Operations, modification, and withdrawal
E3 series entered "Komachi" super express services on the Akita Shinkansen, "Yamabiko", and "Nasuno" super express services on the Tohoku Shinkansen in 1997. However, they began to be displaced with E6 series in 2013, and 17 sets of E3-0 series build until 1998 were scrapped after leaving from "Komachi" services in 2014. On the other hand, R18 set and R19 set among E3-0 train sets built after 2002 were modified and classified into E3-700 series. R23-R26 sets were rearranged into 7-car sets for the Yamagata Shinkansen in 2014 and 2015, and surplus 10 vehicles were scrapped. R20 set was withdrawn in 2015. Remaining R21 and R22 sets had been used on "Nasuno" and "Yamabiko" services in conjunction with a E5. Finally, they were scrapped in 2021.

-1000 subseries
Background and overview
JR East developed E3-1000 series based on E3-0 series respectively to complement the 400 series fleet for the start of extended "Tsubasa" services running through to Shinjyo in 1999. Two 7-car sets consisting of 5 powered vehicles and 2 trailer vehicles with an additional powered intermediate vehicle were delivered in 1999. Since they were used along with 400 series, their maximum service speed is 240km/h.

Car body
Their livery differs from E3-0 series in having a green waistline strip instead of pink strip, and a metallic light gray upper bodyside instead of white. A new "Tsubasa" wing logo is applied to the body sides.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Powered vehicles are equipped with a traction system, CI5A, consisting of a PWM converter employing Gate turn-off (GTO) thyristor and a Variable-frequency drive (VFD) employing GTO thyristor. This traction system controls 4 AC asynchronous traction motors, MT205, with a power output of 300kW on vehicle basis. Class E326-1000, E326-1100 and E322-1000 vehicles are also equipped with a traction transformer, TM211, under their floor. Class E311-1000, E329-1000 and E325-1000 vehicles are equipped with a motor driven screw air compressor, MH1114-TC2000A, under their floor. Class E329-1000 and E328-1000 vehicles are equipped with an ancillary power unit (APU), SC206, with a power output of 77kVA under their floor. These APUs convert 400V single-phase electricity from the third wiring of TM211 into 100V single-phase and 100VDC. Class E326-1000 and E326-1100 vehicles are equipped with a single-arm current pickup, PS206, on their roof. They feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake and holding brake.

Additional delivery
An additional 7-car set delivered to provide additional capacity for services in 2005 have some differences over previous E3-1000 series in having new tractions systems, CI12, incorporating Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT), and DT207B/TR7005B bogies featuring fully active suspension systems for end vehicles and semi-active suspension systems for intermediate vehicles. They also introduced incorporate minor improvements including a door chime and hand-grabs on the edge of aisle seats.
Surplus R23-R26 sets of E3-0 series displaced with E6 series for "Komachi" services were converted to two 7-car sets for "Tsubasa" services to displace two older 7-car E3-1000 series sets and classified into E3-1000 series. The seat arrangement and the direction of the current pickup of class E326-1100 modified from class E326-0 vehicles differ from those of class E326-0. Class E328-1000 vehicles modified from E329-0 included among former E3-0 series sets differ from original E329-0 vehicles in having an additional seating row by removing a flashing urinal and a washroom. One of two ancillary power units equipped class E328-1000 and E329-1000 with modified from class E329-0 were also removed.

Modification
Their maximum service speed was given to 275km/h in 2012. The L53 onward sets of E3-1000 series were gradually repainted into a new livery designed by industrial designer Ken Okuyama. This new livery consists of white to emulate the colure of the snow covering Mount Zaoh, and dark purple inspired by the Mandarin duck, the prefectural bird for Yamagata Prefecture with gradation coloured lining from yellow to red for the safflower, the prefectural flower of Yamagata Prefecture from April 2014.

Operations and withdrawal
They entered "Tsubasa" intercity services along with existing 400 series Shinkansen trains at the start of extended Yamagata Shinkansen to Shinjyo. However, E3-2000 started to displace 400 series and two additional E3-1000 series sets modified from surplus E3-0 series used on "Komachi" services on Akita Shinkansen replaced earlier E3-1000 series L51 and L52 sets incorporating the older traction system employing GTO thyristor in 2014.
3 E3-1000 series train sets incorporating the newer traction system employing IGBT are now used on Yamagata Shinkansen "Tsubasa" services and Tohoku Shinkansen "Nasuno" services.

-2000 subseries
Background and overview
JR East developed E3-2000 series high-speed train type, E3-2000 series, in order to displace superannuated 400 series used on Yamagata Shinkansen "Tsubasa" services in 2008. Twelve 7-car sets consisting of 5 powered vehicles and 2 trailer vehicles were delivered over the period from 2008 until 2012. Their maximum service speed is 275km/h.

Car body
Their headlights were changed into High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps and the design of the cluster of the head lights and taillights was changed. Their livery is metallic light gray upper body side and metallic gray skirting with a green lining. Enlarged full-colored LED destination screens are fitted on their body side and two air conditioners, AU217, rated at 22,000kcal/h fitted under their floor. A new "Tsubasa" wing logo is applied to the body sides.

Bogies
They are equipped with DT207B bogies on the powered vehicles and TR7005B bogies on the trailers, featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension and parallel leaf spring type journal box supporting system. Their bogies incorporate the single link traction device. The wheel diameter is 860mm and their wheelbase is 2250mm, shorter than regular shinkansen bogies for use on both Shinkansen and conventional rail. These bogies adopt the yaw dampers, active suspensions for end vehicles, and semi-active suspensions for the others to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 275km/h. Twin Disc (TD) flexible joint employing deflecting plates made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is applied for power transmission device. The gear ratio is 3.04 to get the maximum service speed at 275km/h. Powered bogies incorporate sanding devices for slip prevention on graded route. Brake rigging is the hydraulic pressure facing caliper wheel disk brake device.

Class E328-2000 in addition to class E311-2000, E329-2000 and E325-2000 vehicles are equipped with a motor driven screw air compressor, MH1114-TC2000A, under their floor to provide additional pneumatic supply to active suspensions. Class E329-1000 are equipped with an ancillary power unit (APU), SC206, with a power output of 77kVA, and classE328-1000 vehicles two under their floor. These APUs convert 400V single-phase electricity from the third wiring of TM211 into 100V single-phase and 100VDC. Class E326-2000 and E326-2100 vehicles are equipped with a single-arm current pickup, PS206, on their roof. They feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake and holding brake. An overhead power disruption detection unit to detect voltage drop and frequency fluctuation while earthquake occurring is employed to activate emergency brake quickly.

All seats are adjustable reclining which is auto rotatable to shorten standing time. 1st class vehicles have 2+2 abreast seating with 1160mm seating pitch to prevent seating capacity from decreasing caused by small passenger cabin, because class E311-2000 vehicles have a long nose end section located toward front of the vehicle, a conductor room, a multi-purpose room, a catering room, toilets, and a washroom located toward rear of the vehicle. Standard class vehicles also have 2+2 abreast seating with 980mm seating pitch (reserved car and non-reserved car). Seating capacity of non-reserved car is reduced caused by this seating pitch increasing. Their seating is supported by a center leg to widen the leg room. All seats are equipped with reading lights under the luggage rack, and AC power supply outlets on the centre armrest of 1st class and the wall of standard class below the window. They adopt free stop roller blinds. A flashing alarm lamp while door opening/closing are fitted on the handrail at the doorways of the sliding doors, and security cameras are also fitted above the door header of the sliding doors. An enlarged full-coloured LED display for providing passenger information is fitted above the door between a vestibule and a passenger saloon. Class E311-2000, E329-2000, and E325-2000 vehicle are equipped with a Western style toilet, a flashing urinal, and a washroom located toward rea of the vehicle. A toilet of class E311-2000 is universal access. Class E329-2000 and E325-2000 vehicles are equipped with a telephone room having a payphone designed to use a pre-paid card.

They entered "Tsubasa" intercity services to displace existing 400 series Shinkansen trains in 2008 and now used on Yamagata Shinkansen "Tsubasa" services and Tohoku Shinkansen "Nasuno" services.
