In 1988, JR East began to build 107 series electric multiple unit (EMU) trains in order to superannuated 165 series EMU used on the rural services of Nikko line, Ryomo line, and Agatsuma line. The 107 series were designed with one motored car per two cars in order to make short formations.
The original design was closely based on the 105-0 series EMU. Their body
was constructed by steel. They are equipped with 3 semi-automatic doors
on each side of the vehicles. Side windows are drop type. All vehicles
are equipped with the gangway and the automatic jumper coupler in order
to couple/uncouple formations easily.
Bolstered air suspension bogies DT32/TR69 transplanted from 165 series
EMU are fitted. Therefore, gear ratio is changed into 5.6. Traction motors,
MT54, transplanted from 165 series EMU, are permanently connected in series.
They were controlled with CS54B traction system in having holding brake
system.
Motored cars are equipped with centralized air conditioner, AU79, and trailer
cars are distributed air conditioners, AU13E, transplanted from 165 series
EMU. Seating is longitudinal throughout. Kuha106 vehicles are equipped
with a Japanese style toilet.
107 series incorporate the mechanism for cooperative operation with EF63
type electric locomotive between Yokogawa and Karuizawa of the Shinetsu
Line, and are classified into -100 sub-series. 107-100 series built in
1989 are equipped with no windows at the door cases.
107 series EMU had been used on the rural services of Nikko line, Ryomo
line, and Agatsuma line. 107-0 series used on the rural services of Nikko
line were replaced with 205 series and withdrawn in 2013. Then 107-100
series used on the rural services of Ryomo line and Agatsuma line were
replaced with 211-3000 series and withdrawn in 2017. |
