The Kagoshima line was being electrified.
So Japan National Railways (JNR) developed 421 series which can be operated
for the local services of DC and 60Hz AC electrified lines in 1960. 421 series
built the standard of suburban trains. The accommodation is semi-cross seats
and their bodies are equipped with 3 doors on each side of the vehicles. Only
the trailer cars are equipped with the toilet. The front shape of the end
car is the same as that of 153 series. Glove ventilators are fitted on the
roof.
DT21 / TR64 coil spring bogies, which had an actual result in 101 series,
are adopted. Traction motors are MT46B, which is taken measures against ripple
current. Gear ratio is 4.82. 421 series adopt electromagnetic straight air
brake and the rheostatic brake together. Moha420s are equipped with the silicon
rectifier and the transformer in order to transform AC into DC. The roof where
the current collector is fitted is low in order to secure insulation. End
cars were changed into the high front cab from 1961
Since traction motors of 421 series had low power, 423 series of which traction
motors were changed into MT54 rated at 120kW were delivered in 1965. 423 series
share trailer cars of 421 series. The ventilators of vehicles built from
1968 were changed into forced ventilators.
Although 421 series were not equipped with the air conditioner at the beginning,
JNR began to fit AU75 air-conditioner from 1979. Later JNR developed the new
air conditioners, AU1X or AU2X, reduced the initial cost, and fitted them.
AU2X is fitted on the floor of the passenger room. The AU1X and AU2X are
powered by 220VAC dropped the voltage of overhead contact line by the transformer,
so these air conditioners need no auxiliary power supply.
421/423 series were used on the local services in Kyushu region. But now
421/423 series were withdrawn completely because 811/813/815 series have displaced
them. |
