711series with 3 doord

711 series were designed for Sapporo regional services on newly AC electrified Hakodate line between Otaru and Asahikawa, and entered the service in 1968. 711 series vehicles adopt thyristor phase control system for the first time among Japanese electric multiple unit (EMU) trains. They didn't adopt rheostatic brake in order to omit the resistors. 711 series adopts 1M system in order to make the short formation. Traction motors are ventilated with the air from which airborne snow is removed from intake air. Traction motors are MT54A rated at 150kW.
New air suspension bogies, DT38 (motored) and TR208 (trailer), are required heavy protection against snow. Their journal box supporting system is the cylindrical guide.
Although the styling was based on that of the 455 series, double-paned windows were featured to protection against the coldness in Hokkaido. Traction motors are ventilated with the air from which airborne snow is removed from intake air. Although passenger accommodation was also based on that of the 455 series, they differs from 455 series in having bench seating besides the doors. 711 series adopt the semi-automatic doors that can be open manually to prevent the passenger's room from being cold in winter. The restrooms are located in the end cars.
Vehicles built from 1980 differ from locating the restroom only in the end car toward Otaru, and having the destination indicator screens. Doors were changed to full-automation.
711 series have been used on local services in Sapporo region. Superannuated 711 series vehicles were displaced with 731 series and 735 series.
