735series
Type index

JR Hokkaido delivered 735 series experimental vehicles to evaluate the suitability of aluminum alloy hollow extrusions construction for lightweight in the cold climate of Hokkaido. They were tested in winter conditions from 2010 to 2011. The cab ends, which use steel construction to secure the strength, are similar to those of 731 series. Their livery is a metallic gray without the waistline strip. Their floor level is 100 mm lower than 731 series to discontinue the step at the doorway. The vehicle design incorporates the shrouding of the under-floor equipment against snow.
Although passenger accommodation was also based on that of the 731 series, they differ from 731 series in discontinuing tip-up seating besides the doors. 735 series are equipped with the semi-automatic doors. Passengers can open or close doors manually by pushing buttons. The air curtains for preventing from open-air coming in are fitted on doorways.
3-car trains consist of a motored intermediate car and two trailer end cars. Intermediate cars are equipped with a current collector, the transformer, and the traction system. The 2 level AVAF (Adjustable Voltage Adjustable Frequency) inverter controls traction motors, N-MT735, rated at 230kw on track basis. Maximum service speed is 120km/h. Regenerative brake is available until 0km/h. Bolster-less bogies adopt the yaw dampers to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 120km/h. their journal box supporting system is axle arm type.
735 series are used in the suburban services in the Sapporo area, Hokkaido.
