815series
Type index

815 series are electric multiple unit (EMU) train developed in 1999 by JR Kyushu for the start of rural services of the newly electrified Houhi line between Kumamoto and Higo-Ohtsu. The 815 series were designed with one motored car per two cars in order to make short formations. 815 series were able to operate coupled to 811 series or 813 series.
815 series EMU incorporates the double-skin aluminum construction incorporated into the vehicle design for light weight achieving both silent cabin room and lower cost. Cab ends were constructed by steel in order to secure strength. 815 series are equipped with the automatic diaphragm device besides the automatic jumper coupler in order to couple/uncouple formations easily.
Their traction system having one PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) converter and one AVAF (Adjustable Voltage Adjustable Frequency) inverter controls 4 AC asynchronous traction motors, MT401KA rated at 150kW. Converter section applies 3-level voltage control and inverter section featuring IGBT applies 2-level voltage control. 815 series features the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake. Kumoha815 car is fitted with a PS401K single-arm current collector.
Bogies are DT404K/TR404K adopting the bolster-less air suspension. Wheel diameter is reduced to 810mm to decrease the difference in level between the platform and the floor of the train. Yaw dampers are prepared to ensure smooth ride characteristics at high speed in the future. Each foundation brake is wheel tread brake device.
Seating is longitudinal throughout. 815 series adopt heat ray absorption windowpanes so blinds are omitted. As for the device of driving cab, one handle master controller operated by the left hand was adopted for the first time in JR Kyushu. Kuha814 vehicles are equipped with an universal access toilet and a wheelchair space. The ticket machine, which put the ticket indicates the boarding station, is located at the boarding doors. The fare display and the fare box are located behind the motorman's cab.
Now 815 series EMU trains are used on the rural services of Kagoshima line and the Houhi line in Kumamoto region anf the Nippo line.
