After the splitting of the former Japanese National Railways (JNR) into
the new privatized JR companies, JR West continued to build kiha120 small
diesel trains. Then JR West developed kiha126 diesel railcars in order
to displace with superannuated diesel railcars in 2000, and entered the
local services of the San-in line in 2001.
The standard formation of kiha126 series is 2-car formation by -0 sub-type
vehicle with the toilet and -1000 sub-type vehicle without toilet. As the
occasion demands, kiha126 can make 3-car or 4-car formation. Their body
construction is that the pressed stainless sheet and the outside sheet
are combined and those sheets themselves keep the strength, such as 223-2000
series suburban electric multiple unit (EMU) trains. Kiha126's body surface
is flat and smooth. Two side doors with the footstep are located at the
both ends of the body. There are not any doors for the train crew.
Lightweight bolster-less bogies, WDT60/WTR244, are adopted. Vehicles are equipped with a motored bogie and a trailer bogie. Kiha126 series are equipped with a traction engine, SA6D140-H-1, a vehicle and are equipped with hydraulic transmission gears, N-DW15A in order to achieve high service speed and high acceleration performance. Since the generators for auxiliary power is driven by the traction engines, and can supply 440VAC such as electric trains, electric system is same as electric trains. The brake system is changed into the electric command brake such as electric trains. How to operate kiha126 is same as electric trains.
Passenger accommodation is mixture of longitudinal bench seating and transverse
seating bays, with extensive use of wood for seat armrests or window frames.
A air conditioner, WAU707 rated at 20,000kcal/h, is fitted on the roof.
Kiha126 vehicles onward introduced from 2003 incorporate minor improvements, including the soundproofing floor construction, additional doors for crews, increased air conditioners. Twin cab vehicles were also introduced and classified into kiha121. Kiha121 vehicles are also equipped with a toilet.
Kiha126 series are used on the rapid or local services of the San-in line. |
