Background and overview
JR Hokkaido rebuilt kiha141/142 diesel multiple unit (EMU) pre-production vehicles from surplus class ohafu51 locomotive-hauled coaches in order to displace superannuated kiha22 and kiha56 DMU vehicles in 1990. They were 2-car sets consisting of a kiha141 and a kiha142.
Car body
Their underframe was modified to be rebuilt into DMU vehicles. The supporting
device for underfloor engine and the reinforcement of the doorway step
were introduced in order to be fitted with a prime mover and a hydraulic
transmission under their floor. The height of their bolster beams was also
reduced to be fitted with bogies for DMU. A hinged door located at the
front of the vehicle for the train crew was moved in order to change the
conductor's room into the cab. They were also equipped with windscreens,
headlights, taillights, and the obstacle deflector on the front of end
section. 4.5mm thick plate was welded on the cab end for the protection
and they employed raised driver's cab against obstacles at the level crossing.
The rear conductor's room was changed into the equipment room and hinged
doors located there were filled with the plate by welding. A toilet of
class kiha142 was also changed into a pneumatic equipment room. Two 1,000mm
wide stepped single leaf automatic sliding doors and double-paned windows
between the doors were carried from former class ohafu51 coaches. One exhaust
pipe of a prime mover was fitted inside the equipment room located at the

Kiha142-201 having modified passenger door control circuits was also inserted into another kiha143 2-car set to make them a 3-car set.
Class kisaha144
Background and overview
JR Hokkaido rebuilt class kisaha144 trailer intermediate vehicles in order to be coupled with existing class kiha141 and class 142 DMU vehicles from surplus class ohafu51 locomotive-hauled coaches in order to provide additional capacity for the overcrowded Sassho line trains. Three class kisaha144-100 vehicles and a class kisaha144-150 vehicle were delivered in 1994.
Car body
Their underframe was modified to be rebuilt into DMU trailer vehicles.
The height of their bolster beams was reduced to fit them with bogies for
DMU. The conductor's rooms located at the front and the rear of the vehicle
