E129series
Type index

In 2015, JR East developed E129 series DC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains in order to replace superannuated 115 series EMU used on the ordinary services in Niigata region. 4 car formations are classified into -0 subseries and 2 car formations are classified into -100 subseries.
The vehicle design incorporates stain-less steel. Floor level is reduced to 1130mm to decrease the difference in level between the platform and the floor of the train. Externally, trains are finished in a livery with "golden yellow" and "crested ibis pink" stripes. They are equipped with 3 pairs of doors on each side of the vehicles.
Since E129 series offer 0.5M system in order to reduce the difference of body weight, all cars are powered. Asynchronous motors, MT75B, rated at140kW are controlled by AVAF inverter traction system, adopting Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) inverter, on track basis. Either KumohaE129 or MohaE129, which is equipped with a traction system, makes a pair with either KumahaE128 or MohaE128. KumohaE129 and MohaE129 are equipped with a single-arm type current collector, PS33G. Some KumohaE129-100 vehicles are equipped with a second de-icing current collector.
E129 series are equipped with bolster-less air spring bogies, DT71C/D (motored) and TR255D/E (trailer), designed based on those of E233 series trains. E129 series adopt mixed regenerative-dynamic braking under low possibility of regeneration. Brake registers are fitted on the roof of the motored cars.
Seating accommodation consists of transverse seating and longitudinal bench seating. Passengers can open or close doors manually by pushing buttons located at the door side. The passenger saloons use LED lighting, and the trains are equipped with universal access toilets and wheelchair spaces. 2 car formations feature several facilities for conductor-less operation. The fare display and the fare box are located behind the motorman's cab. The ticket machine, which put the ticket indicating the boarding station, is omitted.
E129 series are now used the ordinary services of Shinetsu line, Jyoetsu line, Uetsu line, Echigo line, Hakushin line, and Yahiko line in Niigata region.
