Background and overview
JR Kyushu developed hybrid diesel-electric multiple unit (DMU) train, YC1
series, and delivered pre-production set of YC-0 series in order to replace
superannuated Kiha66 series DMU in 2018.
Car body
They have 2800mm narrow body. Their body design incorporates stainless
steel in order to realize lightweight body, employing laser beam welding
to realize flush body sides and strong body. They are equipped with 3 double-leaf
semi-automatic sliding doors on each side of the vehicles and fixed windows
employing heat absorbent and UV cut tempered glass. The cab end is painted
in black and sliding doors is in metallic orange. A unique feature of the
YC1 series sets is a cluster of LED lamps surrounding the cab; these also
serve as indicators for which end of the train it is (i.e. red for the
end car). Door operating equipment is driven by the electricity. An air
conditioner, AU413K rated at 48.8kW (42,000kcal/h), is fitted on the centre
of their roof and Lithium-ion batteries on the front of their roof. Full-colour
LED destination indicators are fitted on the body. A front cab section
has an automatic jumper coupler to ease rush-up operations and end section
excepting YC1-200/-1200 vehicles also has an automatic jumper coupler in
order to consist of odd number vehicles formation.
Bogies
Their bogies are DT411KA/TR411KA featuring bolster-less air suspension
and tandem type journal box supporting system constructed by a coil spring
supporting vertical load and two cylindrical laminated rubber supporting
longitudinal or transverse load.
Traction unit and auxiliary equipments
YC1 series employ self-propelled series hybrid DMU combining a diesel generator
and battery storage power. A prime mover is six-cylinder engine, SA6D10HE-3
of Komatsu Ltd, with a power output of 331kW (450PS)/2000rpm employing
turbocharegr, intercooler, and common rail direct fuel injection in order
to achieve clean exhaust and low fuel consumption. Featuring Controller
Area Network (CAN bus) realizes real-time communication on fault and operation
information to improve engine control performance.
A prime mover is connected to an electrical generator, DM601K, by a flexible plate type shaft joint.
Traction motors are PG (Pulse Generator) sensor-less asynchronous motors,
MT407K, with a power output of 130kW featuring fully closed external fan
cooling to improve workability in maintenance. Their transmission device
is WN coupling. Their gear ratio is 6.5. Their traction system, PC410K,
consists of inverter unit controlling 2 traction motors, converter unit
controlling an electrical generator, and auxiliary power supply unit. The
direct current stage of this traction system is connected to lithium-ion
battery modules having 24kWh charging capacity. If these battery modules
are charged enough, a prime mover stops and electricity is supplied from
battery modules. When the regerative braking is in operation, regenerative
electric power supplies to auxiliary power supply unit and battery modules
to charge. The brake system is the electric command brake featuring truck
basis control. Regenerative brake and holding brake are available. Commands
of service braking are carried by CAN bus.
Accommodation
Seating accommodation is mixture of transverse seating bays with a table
and longitudinal bench seating. Their floor, tables, and the under cover
of luggage rack are made of wood. The passenger saloons use LED recessed
lighting. All vehicles are equipped with an equipment room and YC1-0/100/200
vehicles are equipped with a universal access toilet featuring vacuum toilet
system. LCD passenger information display units are fitted above the door
header of the sliding doors and on the wall of an equipment room.
The analog indicators of the driver's cab are changed into the liquid crystal
display. Switched for automatic sliding door operation are fitted on either
side of the liquid crystal display. A sliding fare box is located behind
the motorman's cab.
Operations
JR Kyushu began to deliver mass-production type of YC1 series classified
-100/-1100 or -200/-1200 subseries from 2020. They gradually replace superannuated
Kiha66 series used on the rural and rapid services of Ohmura line. |
