Background and overview
Japanese National Railways introduced 167 series DC electric multiple unit
(EMU) developed from earlier 165 series express-type EMU for use on school
excursion services in 1965.
Car body
They have 2900mm wide body. Their body design incorporates lightweight
shaped steel and pressed forming beam to realize a light weight body. They
were originally painted in the JNR excursion train livery of yellow No.
5 and red No. 3. The roof of Class Moha166 vehicles became lower where
the current collector was fitted. Forced ventilators are fitted on the
roof. They adopted double-hung unit assembled windows and 2 single-leaf
doors with 700mm width on each side of the vehicles. No door cases are
fitted.
Bogies
167 series adopt DT32B/TR69B air suspension DT32/TR69 bogies having simpler
construction for easier maintenance.
Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Eight series-wound brushed DC traction motors, MT54, with a power output
of 120 kW are controlled by armature-resistance traction control system,
CS15, featuring holding brake. The gear ratio is 4.21. Class Moha166 vehicles
are equipped with a diamond-shaped current collector, PS16, and a motor
generator, MH97-DM61, with a power output of 20kVA. 167 series adopt electromagnetic
straight air brake. The rheostatic brake is available.
Accommodation
They have transverse seating bays with 1460mm seating pitch. Each bay has flip-up and removable table. One bay can be changed into a simple bad. All vehicles are vestibule and equipped with a Japanese style toilet, a washroom, and a storeroom.
Operations
After school excursion services were moved to Shinkansen in 1974, 167 series
were used on the extra express services during peak periods. Their livery
was changed into the Shonan livery of orange and green.
Modification
JNR began to retrofit the air conditioners, AU72 rated at 33000 kcal/h,
to unairconditioned Moha166, six AU13ENs to unairconditioned Moha167, and
five to Kuha167 from 1978. Moha166 vehicles belonged to Miyagara depots
are also remodeled a toilet and a storeroom into conductor rooms.
Withdrawal
The last remaining vehicles of 167 series were withdrawn in 2003. |
