In 1998, JR West developed 285 series electric multiple unit (EMU) trains
in order to replace superannuated locomotive-hauled "Blue Train"
coaches, to improve services, and to raise the service speed. 285 series
EMU features private cabins. Sets owned by JR West are classified into
-0 sub-series, and sets owned by JR Central are classified into -3000 sub-series.
These sets are consists of 7 cars including 2 single floor motored cars and 5 bilevel trailer cars. Their bodies are constructed by steel. The end cars have gangwayed cab end in order to couple 2 formations. The destination indicator screens are fitted. The trains are finished in a livery of "Morning Glow" red and "Morning Mist" beige with "Sun Rise" gold lining.
Bogies are WDT58/WTR242 given several improvements on those of 223-1000
series EMU, and adopt yaw dampers and anti-rolling stabilizer to ensure
smooth ride characteristics even at high speed.
Traction motors are asynchronous motors, WMT102A, rated at 220kW, which
were controlled on axle basis by AVAF inverter traction systems unified
with auxiliary power supply. These traction systems feature IGBT and fields
oriented control. Sarohane285 vehicles are equipped with another auxiliary
power supply unit. 285 series EMU adopt mixed regenerative-dynamic braking
under low possibility of regeneration. Brake registers are fitted on the
roof of the motored cars. The motor cars are each fitted with one WPS28A
single-arm current collector. An additional current collector is fitted
later.
