287 series used on "Kinosaki"



Background and overview
JR West developed 287 series intercity DC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains to displace superannuated 183-800 series used on "Kita Kinki" intercity services linking Osaka and Kinosaki-Onsen, "Kinosaki" linking Kyoto and Kinosaki-Onsen, or "Maizuru" linking Kyoto and Higashi-Maizuru, and superannuated 381 series used on "Kuroshio" linking Osaka and Shirahama/Shingu in 2010. Eleven 3-car sets, seven 4-car sets, and six 6-car sets were delivered over the period from 2010 until the following year.

Car body
The double-skinned aluminum alloy construction is incorporated into the vehicle design. Their body is equipped with their corner posts having a triangular guide and the groove inside the side wall near the end plate to bend side wall inwards by absorbing impact energy in order to guide another vehicle colliding with apart for the non-head-on collision accident measure. Cab end also employs the frontal impact accident measure that upper section of the cab is made weaker than the other section to absorb the impact energy. All end vehicles are gangwayed featuring raised driver's cab and storable gangway connection to improve end section appearance. Class kumoroha286 vehicles have a fixed cover plate at the gangway. Anti-fall plates between vehicles are also introduced excepting the cab end. End vehicles are equipped with an automatic jumper coupler to ease rush-up operations. Class moha286-100, moha286-200 and moha287-100 vehicles are equipped with both a 1000mm wide single-leaf sliding door and a 700mm wide single-left sliding door, and the other vehicles are equipped with a 700mm wide single-leaf sliding door. Wide fixed double-glazing UV cut windows aligned two seating bays are fitted. Train-type rollsigns and LED destination indicators are fitted on each side of their body. All vehicles are also equipped with an air conditioner, WAU704E, using R407C refrigerant. Electric fans of air conditioner supply fresh air into the passenger room, instead of ventilators on the roof, and automatic dampers for air intake are employed to reduce pressure fluctuation while running through the tunnel and realize quickly carry out cooling and heating by shutting dampers. Cover plates are fitted between equipments fitted under their floor to reduce the waving for preventing snow and ice from sticking thereon. Their livery is white with gray wide band around side windows, and dark red or ocean green narrow band under side windows.

Bogies
Motored bogies are WDT67, trailer bogies of end vehicles are WTR249A, and trailer bogies for intermediate vehicles WTR249 featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension, axle arm type journal box supporting system, and the single link traction device. Their bogie employing bow-shaped bogie frame to lower the fitting position of bolster suspension realizes to lower the floor level. These bogies feature 2000mm wide distance between two secondary air suspension, the yaw dampers, and anti-rolling stabilizer to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 130km/h. Quiet Westinghouse-Natal drive is applied for power transmission device. The gear ratio is 5.65 to get high acceleration performance and the maximum service speed at 130km/h. Motored bogie employs single tread brake rigging and trailer bogie employs both the double disk brake rigging and the single tread brake rigging. WTR246C also employs parking brake device.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Each 287 series vehicles are equipped with a trailer bogie and a powered bogie having two traction motors controlled by the traction system to keep up the transport service easily while a traction system is failed and to realize optimized regenerative braking with simple control. Their traction system, WPC15A-G2, employing Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) controls two PG (Pulse Generator) sensor-less asynchronous motors, WMT106A-G2, with a power output of 270kW. Their traction system featuring 2 level Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is integrated with the auxiliary power supply unit with a power output of 75kVA, synchronizing with other auxiliary power supply units throughout the overall train set to achieve higher redundancy while in failure. Class kumoha287 and moha287 vehicles are equipped with a motor driven rotary-screw air compressor, WMH3098-WRC1600, under their floor and with a single arm current pickup, WPS28C, on their roof and prepared to be fitted with another current pickup on their roof. Class moha287-100 vehicles are equipped with 2 current pickups with the second one serving as a de-icing current pickup. They feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake and holding brake.

Accommodation
All seats are adjustable reclining. 1st class vehicles have 2+1 abreast seating with 1160mm seating pitch and standard class vehicles have 2+2 abreast seating with 970mm seating pitch. 1st class seating is equipped with a power supply outlet on the edge of respective armrest. A LED display for providing passenger information is fitted above the door between a vestibule and a passenger saloon. All vehicles excepting class kumoha287 and moha287-200 are equipped with a western style toilet, a flushing urinal, and a washroom. Each toilet has the vacuum toilet system. Class moha286-100, moha286-200, and moha287-100 vehicles are equipped with a universal access toilet employing a flip-up diaper-changing station and a flip-up high chair. Class moha286-200 vehicles are also equipped with a conductor room and a multi-purpose room. Furthermore, class moha287-200 vehicles are equipped with a catering room.

Operations
46 vehicles were delivered to Fukuchiyama depot and entered intercity services for "Kounotori", "Kinosaki", and "Maizuru" and are now used along with 289 series in 2011.
On the other hand, 51 vehicles were delivered to Hineno depot and entered the "Kuroshio" intercity services in 2012, and are now used along with 289 series.
