Kumoha289

Kuro288 used on "Kounotori" service

Background and overview
683-2000 series used on "Shirasagi" intercity services linking Nagano and Kanazawa were displaced with 681 series trainsets after the start of the operations on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Because of this, JR West converted surplus 683-2000 series into intercity DC electric multiple unit classified into 289 series in order to displace superannuated 381-0 series EMU used on "Kuroshio" and 381-1000 series used on "Kounotori", "Kinosaki2, and "Hashidate" intercity services in 2015. 7 trailer intermediate vehicles, class saha683-2500, were plucked out from 7 five-car set to form 7 four-car sets for "Kounotori", "Kinosaki", and "Hashidate" intercity services. Then 5 surplus trailer intermediate vehicles, class saha683-2500, plucked out from five-car sets were inserted into other five-car sets to form 5 six-car sets for "Kuroshio" intercity services.

Car body
Vehicles for "Kuroshio" is painted in white with gray wide band around side windows, and ocean green narrow band under side windows. On the other hand, vehicles for "Kounotori", "Kinosaki", and "Hashidate" is painted in white with gray wide band around side windows, and dark red narrow band under side windows.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Initially 289 series ceased to use equipments for AC electrification. However, AC electricity equipments such as the vacuum circuit breaker, the 3-level traction converters, WPC12, the traction transformer, WTM27, and the surge protective device for high voltage alternating current to name a few. Their acceleration performance was changed from original 1.8 km/h/s into 1.6 km/h/s and constant speed control range was changed from 75 km/h into 55km/h to fit to 287 series EMU.

Accommodation
Class kuro288-2000 vehicles were fitted with additional partition wall toward middle of the vehicle to assigned the front half of the vehicle as 1st class and the rest as standard class in order to fit 287 series EMU and reclassified into class kuroha288-2000. Standard class accommodation of class kuroha289-2000 is 2+2 abreast adjustable reclining seating with 970mm seating pitch. All 1st class seats and standard class seats at end of each car have power supply outlets for mobile PC users.
