8600series
Type index

In 2014, JR Shikoku developed 8600 series intercity electric multiple unit (EMU) trains in order to replace 2000 series intercity diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains used on the intercity services on the electrified line, featuring pneumatic tilting bogies. 8600 series fleet consists of two-car sets and three-car sets.
The vehicle design incorporates stain-less steel adopting laser beam welding and the pass-through door in front of the body, featuring the shock absorption construction of the end cars. 8600 series are equipped with semi-automatic side doors. Passengers can open or close doors manually by pushing buttons.
4 PG (Pulse Generator) sensor-less asynchronous motors, S-MT63, rated at 220kW are controlled by 2-level AVAF inverter traction system on axle basis. In emergency, traction systems for either motor car can be cut off. 8600 series don't adopt rheostatic brake like 8000 series but mixed regenerative-dynamic braking under low possibility of regeneration. Trailer end cars, type 8700 and type 8750, are equipped with a single-arm type current pickup, S-PS61. Current collectors are fixed with the wire ropes to bogies so that current collectors may not deviate very much from the overhead contact line at the time of a body tilting.
They feature S-DT66/S-TR66 bogies, adopting the bolster-less air suspension, axle arm type journal box supporting system, and anti-yaw dampers for improved stability. Vehicle bodies can be tilted by up to 2 degrees using air suspension by referring database of curves along the line to begin tilting before reaching the curve, or detecting the curve by the gyroscopic and the accelerometer.
All seating is adjustable reclining. 1st class have 1+2 abreast seating and standard class vehicles have 2+2 abreast seating. The seat pitch of the 1st class is 1170mm and the standard class is 980mm. LED lighting is used throughout. All end cars are equipped with the western style toilet. Trailer end cars are equipped with a universal access toilet.
8600 series are used on the "Shiokaze" and "Ishizuchi" intercity services.
