JR West developed 87 series luxury hybrid diesel multiple unit (DMU) sleeping-car
excursion train, branded "Twilight Express Mizukaze", in order
to make railway journey more attraitive, in 2017.
The ten-coach train consists of 6 sleeping cars, a lounge car, a dining
car, and observation cars at either end of the train with open balconies.
Five of sleeping cars have three private suite rooms branded "Royal
single" or" Royal twin", while one sleeping room has a luxury
suite occupying the entire coach and featuring a bathtub and private balcony.
Sleeping cars are trailer vehicles, and the others are powered vehicles.
Powered vehicles and a sleeping car of "Suite" adopting double-deck
are constructed by steel and the others are constructed by double-skin
aluminum.
Bogies are WDT69/WTR250, adopting the bolster-less air suspension with
anti-yaw dampers, anti-rolling stabilizer, and computer controlled active
vibration control devices for improved stability.
The train is a ten-car self-propelled hybrid diesel multiple unit (DMU) train combining a diesel generator and battery storage power, allowing it to operate on the non-electrified Sanin Main Line. Motored cars are equipped with 2 diesel engines, SA6D140HE-3 of Komatsu Ltd. Prime movers are connected to electrical generators, WDM115 rated at 440kVA. Generated electricity having constant voltage and constant frequency is supplied for lightning and air conditioners except for traction motors and makes auxiliary power supply unit discontinued. Their traction system features low terminal voltage and water-cooling in order to realize small outside dimensions for fitting on the roof of the vehicles. Energy storage battery is lithium-ion battery to drive traction motors on starting from standhill or during prime movers cut out. When braking, the motor acts as a generator, recharging the batteries. Traction motors are PG (Pulse Generator) sensor-less asynchronous motors, WMT108, rated at 130kW, corresponding 600V terminal voltage, contolled on axle basis. The brake system is the electric command brake. Regenerative brake and holding brake are available. Passenger accommodation design incorporates "art deco" style, featuring 3 classes of cabins. The cars contain decorative touches from regions along the routes.
