"Sonic" intercity service
Background and overview
In 1994, JR Kyushu developed intercity AC electric multiple unit (EMU) tilting trains, 883 series, in order to reduce the journey time of Nippo line intercity services facing increasing competition for passenger transport from buses and private automobiles with the full opening of the Oita Expressway linking Tosu and Hiji, with further track strengthening between Kokura and Oita.

Car body
They have unpainted 2950mm wide body, incorporating light weight stainless steel construction. No steps are located at the doorway by introducing the lower floor. They are equipped with a 900mm wide single-leaf sliding door and small fixed windows per each seat on each side of their body. Trailer end car, class kuroha882, having both 1st class seating and standard class seating, is equipped with a door at the centre of the body to divide a vehicle into two passenger saloons. The other cars are equipped with a door at the end of the car. Cab ends painted in cerulean blue colour are constructed by steel having characteristic shape such as insects with no gangway. Traditional roller-binding destination and classification screens are fitted on the side of the body. Two air conditioners, AU406K, rated at 19,000kcal/h are fitted on their roof.

Bogies
Motored bogies are DT402K and trailer bogies are TR402K, featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension, coil spring primary suspension with cylindrical laminated rubber, built-in roller devices for body tilting system and the yaw dampers to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 130km/h. The wheel diameter is reduced to 810mm to make their centre of gravity lower. A roller-type tilting system controlled by a computer realizes 30km/h faster travelling than standard limited speed on curves. Motored bogies employ single tread brake device and trailer bogies employ double disk brake device.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Their traction system, PC401K, consisting of the converter featuring thyristor phase control and the inverter featuring GTO thyristor controls AC asynchronous traction motors, MT402KA, with a power output of 190kW, on axle basis. The cardan driving device is a twin disk (TD) coupling. Intermediate trailer cars, class saha883, coupled with motored car as a married pair unit are equipped with a traction transformer, TM405K, and a traction rectifier, RS406K, under the floor. RS406K features 2 stage serially connected stack. While either stack is failed, only remaining single stack is available for 883 series vehicles to run. Class saha883 vehicles are equipped with a cross arm current pickup, PS401K, on the roof, mounted on support bases connected directly to their bogies. 883 series feature the electric commanding brake with rheostatic brake, employing anti-slip control by axle-driven tachometer generator fitted to each axle in order to achieve brake performance efficiently even at 130km/h.

Accommodation
All seats are adjustable reclining with headrest associated with the form of animal ears. 1st class vehicles have 2+1 abreast seating with 1150mm seating pitch and standard class vehicles have 2+2 abreast seating with 1000mm seating pitch. 1st class seating featuring electric motion is covered in black leather. Standard class vehicles except class moha883-200 are equipped with two 4-seat compartments branded "Centre booth" in the centre of the passenger saloon. Class moha883-200 vehicles are equipped with a catering room branded "Cruise room", useable as the simplified buffet. Class kumoha883 and moha883 are equipped with both a western style toilet for male and that for female. Class kuroha882 is equipped with a universal access toilet for handicapped and unisex. The vacuum toilet system is introduced for every toilet.

Operations
Two 7-car sets in 1994 and one 7-car set in 1995 were delivered to Oita depot and entered the "Sonic Nichirin" intercity revenue services in April, 1995. Additional two 7-car sets were delivered in 1996 and 1997. Three 5-car sets were also delivered in 1997. The current pickup started to be changed into the single-arm type, PS401KA, in 2000.

Modification and refurbishment
In 2005, 883 series EMU started to undergo extensive refurbishment programme. Their livery was changed into entire indigo metallic blue. Their ceiling, wall, and luggage rack of their passenger saloons were painted in glossy white. The colour of 1st class seating cover and floor carpet fabric was changed into brown. The hinged door of a universal access toilet located in class kuroha882 was changed into sliding door to improve accessibility. 4-seat compartments branded "Centre booth" were displaced with standard reclining seating. The moquette of standard class seating was changed into red based coloured. The standard class floor was changed into unvarnished wooden flooring.

883-1000 series
Background and overview
JR Kyushu introduced additional intermediate cars, class moha883-1000 (powered) and saha883-1000 (trailer), to relieve overcrowding and unify their formations in 2008.

Car body
883-1000 series incorporated different vehicle design from 883-0 series in employing the double-skinned aluminum alloy construction based on that of 885 series, adopting friction stir welding.

Bogies
Bogies are DT406K/TR406K employed for 885 series.

Traction unit and auxiliary equipments
Their traction motors and traction system are same as those of 885 series. 883-1000 series feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake, without employing brake control of trailer priority to adjust existing 883 series brake system. Class moha883-1000 vehicles are equipped with a single arm current pickup, PS401KA, on the roof, mounted on support bases connected directly to their bogies.

Accommodation
All seats of 883-1000 series are same adjustable reclining seating as that of 885 series standard class excepting the material of the seating cover employing red based coloured moquette. Class saha883-1000 are equipped with both a western style toilet for male and that for female.
