Background and overview
In 2000, JR Kyushu developed intercity AC electric multiple unit (EMU)
tilting trains, 885 series, in order to reduce the journey time of "Kamome"
intercity services by using 485 series EMU and 783 series EMU. 885 series
are 6-car formation consisting of 3 motored cars and 3 trailer cars.
Car body
The double-skinned aluminum alloy construction featuring friction stir
welding is incorporated into the vehicle design. The end section of the
trains employs streamline shape with no gangway. They are equipped with
a 900mm wide single-leaf sliding door and small fixed windows per each
seat on each side of their body. Trailer end car, class kuroha884, having
both 1st class seating and standard class seating, is equipped with a door
at the centre of the body to divide a vehicle into two passenger saloons.
The other cars are equipped with a door at the end of the car. No steps
are located at the doorway by introducing the lower floor. The doorway
is equipped with the cylinder to press the door against the body in order
to reduce the fluctuation of atmospheric pressure in the passenger room.
"KAMOME" nameplates are applied by every door. The LED destination
indicators are fitted on the side of the body. Two air conditioners, AU408K,
rated at 21,000kcal/h are fitted on their roof. Their livery is white with
black and yellow accents.
Bogies
Motored bogies are DT406K and trailer bogies are TR406K, featuring bolster-less
secondary air suspension, coil spring primary suspension with cylindrical
laminated rubber, built-in roller devices for body tilting system and the
yaw dampers to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 130km/h. The
wheel diameter is reduced to 810mm to make their centre of gravity lower.
A roller-type tilting system controlled by a computer realizes 30km/h faster
travelling than standard limited speed on curves. Motored bogies employ
single tread brake device and trailer bogies employ double disk brake device.
Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Their traction system, PC402K, consisting of a 3-level converter employing
Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) and a 2-level Variable-frequency
drive (VFD) employing IGBT controls 4 AC asynchronous traction motors,
MT402KA, with a power output of 190kW. They adopt mixed regenerative-dynamic
braking under low possibility of regeneration. The cardan driving device
is a twin disk (TD) coupling. The motored intermediate cars, class moha885-0,
are equipped with a traction transformer, TM407K, under the floor, supplying
to class kumoha885 and class moha885-0 vehicles. The other motored intermediate
cars, class moha885-100, are equipped with a traction transformer, TM408K,
under the floor, supplying to only class moha885-100 vehicles. Class moha885
vehicles are equipped with a single arm current pickup, PS401KA, on the
roof, mounted on support bases connected directly to their bogies. 885
series feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake, featuring
brake control of trailer priority.
Accommodation
All seats are adjustable reclining. 1st class vehicles have 2+1 abreast
seating with 1150mm seating pitch and standard class vehicles have 2+2
abreast seating with 980mm seating pitch. Both 1st class and standard class
seating is covered in black leather. The interior flooring and seating
table are made of wood. Their luggage rack is the airplane overhead bin
style. Kumoha885 and saha885-0 are equipped with both a western style toilet
for male and that for female. Kuroha884 is equipped with a western style
toilet for 1st class passengers. Moha885-100 is equipped with a western
style toilet for male and a universal access toilet for handicapped and
female.
Operations
885 series entered the "Kamome" intercity revenue services in 2000.
Additional delivery
Additional 885 series vehicles were delivered for "Sonic" intercity
services linking Hakata and Oita to operate by only pendulum trains. These
sets were changed into 5-car formations, causing the modification of class
moha885-100 to introduce a unisex western toilet and a telephone room and
to be classified into -200 subclass. Seating colour is changed into brown.
Nameplates by every door were changed into "Sonic" symbol. Their
livery was changed into white with black and blue accents. These sets entered
the "Sonic" intercity revenue services in 2001. Additional trailer
intermediate cars, class Saha885-300, were inserted to change 5-car formations
used on "Sonic" intercity services into 6 cars in 2003. At this
time, nameplates of all vehicles were removed. And the livery of the sets
used on "Kamome" intercity services was changed into white with
black and blue accents.
Latest operation status
885 series EMU are now used on "Kamome" and "Sonic"
intercity services. |
