In 2010, JR West developed Kiha189 series in order to replace superannuated Kiha181 used on "Hamakaze" intercity services between Osaka and Tottori via the Bantan line. Standard 3-car formation consists of two type Kiha189 end cars and a type Kiha188 intermediate car. Automatic couplers are fitted at each end.
The vehicle design incorporates light-weight and stronger stainless steel.
The front profile feature rounded design and a pass-through door.
2 traction engines SA6D140HE-2, a vehicle and 2 hydraulic transmission
gears, DW21, a vehicle achieve maximum service speed of 130km/h and high
acceleration performance of 2.0km/h/s. Specifications are selectable at
those of Kiha181 series or kiha47 series. Traction engines adopt Common
rail direct fuel injection in order to achieve clean exhaust. Since the
generators for auxiliary power is driven by the traction engines, and can
supply 440VAC such as electric trains, electric system is same as electric
trains. The brake system is changed into the electric command brake such
as electric trains. They differ from Kiha187 series in not having the body
tilting system. Bogies based on those of 223-2000 series features bolster-less
air suspension and axle arm type journal box supporting system.
Passengers' accommodation provides only standard class. All seating is adjustable reclining. The seat pitch is 970mm. the seats at the end of Each car have power supply outlets for mobile PC users. Kiha189-0 is equipped with the toilet for a wheelchair.
Kiha189 series entered "Hamakaze" intercity services on 7 November,
2010, displacing Kiha181 series trains used of these services. |
