JR Hokkaido decided to develop Kiha281 series DMU with pendulum body tilting
mechanism based on 2000 series of JR Shikoku for speeding up in the curve
in 1991 and entered "Super Hokuto" services in 1993, although
"Hokuto" intercity services between Sapporo and Hakodate by Kiha183
series took 3 hours and a half.
Kiha281 series adopt the lightweight stainless steel body. Cab ends use
steel construction to secure the strength. The vehicle design incorporates
raised drivers cab and the pass-through door in front of the body. Bolster-less
air suspension bogies, N-DT281A, are equipped with built-in bearing guides
for body tilting system, and equipped with yaw dampers to ensure smooth
ride characteristics even at high speed. Kiha281 series are equipped with
2 traction engines, N-DMF11HZA, rated at 355PS a vehicle and are equipped
with hydraulic transmission gears, N-DW15A in order to achieve maximum
service speed at 130km/h and high acceleration performance. The brake system
is the electric command brake, incorporating the exhaust braking. Brake
shoes are special cast iron made at Naebo Depot.
All seats are adjustable reclining. 1st class vehicles have 1+2 abreast
seating and seat pitch is 1145mm and standard class vehicles have 2+2 abreast
seating and seat pitch is 960mm.
Traction engines are replaced with N-DMF11HZD rated at 355PS.
Now Kiha281 series are used in "Super Hokuto" services between Sapporo and Hakodate. |
