Background and overview
Since Kyudai line with Yufuin, specifically located near the largest cities
in Kyushu, namely Fukuoka and Kitakyushu, having many plans of resort developments
will have a capacity of developing. So, JR Kyushu had a plan to operate
"Yufuin-No-Mori" intercity services linking Hakata and Beppu
via Yufuin to lead an image improvement of Kyudai line and cultivate travel
demand. Thus, JR Kyushu developed the kiha71 series intercity diesel multiple
unit (DMU) train in 1989. Kiha71 series vehicles were assembled from newly
built car bodies and the other equipments transplanted from class kiha65
and kiha58 vehicles. Thier train-set consists of two end vehicles, class
kiha71, and an intermediate vehicle, class kiha70.
Car body
They have 2900mm wide body constructed by steel, featuring 600mm higher seating floor than usual. End vehicles are not gangwayed employing double column curved windscreens to have a commanding view of the tracks ahead. The upper part of the side construction having wider fixed windows is slanted at 10 degrees to have a panoramic and dynamic view. Their livery is metallic green with the double gold waistline bands running the length of each car below the windows. "Yufuin No Mori" nameplates are applied to the front and side of every vehicle. Traditional destination rollsigns are fitted on the body. Two air conditioners, AU601K, rated at 15,000 kcal/h are fitted under the floor.
Bogies
Class kiha71 vehicles are equipped with a powered bogie, DT39B, and a trailer
bogie, TR218B which were transplanted from class kiha65 vehicles, featuring
extended links journal supporting system, the rubber airbag secondary suspension
having the virtual center pivot construction, and 2-axle drive. Brake rigging
is disk brake powered by bogie mounted brake cylinders. A class kiha70
vehicle is equipped with two powered bogies, DT22C, which were transplanted
from a class kiha58 vehicle, featuring pedestal guide type journal supporting
system, coil springs secondary suspension, and 1-axle drive. Brake rigging
is the single tread brake powered by the body mounted brake cylinder.
Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Class kiha71 vehicles are powered by one diesel prime mover, DML30HSD,
with a power output of 500PS and transmitted by hydraulic transmission
gear, DW14. A class kiha70 vehicle is powered by two diesel prime movers,
DMH17H, with a power output of 180PS and transmitted by hydraulic transmission
gears, TC2A. Class kiha71 vehicles are also equipped with a generator,
DM83A, with a power output of 70kVA powered by diesel engine, 4VK8.8 with
a power output of 90PS to supply electricity for air conditioners. Their
brake system is the automatic electromagnetic pneumatic brake, DARE1, or
the automatic pneumatic brake, DA1, with compression release engine brake.
Accommodation
Passenger accommodation is reclining seating with 960mm seating pitch and the footrest. Sliding curtains having brass curtain rails fitted on the upper and lower of window frames are applied for side windows. Gilded wire basket racks are fitted above the windows. Fire-resistant wooden floor is featured. The baggage shelf to store large suitcases and coin lockers to store valuables are located between the passenger saloon and the vestibule. A buffet counter is set up in class kiha70 vehicle and is equipped with a fridge, microwave oven, electric kettle, ice cream containers, percolator, sink and others; snacks and drinks can be sold from the counter. Class kiha71 vehicles are equipped with a Japanese style ceramic toilet with a chemical holding tank and a wash room.
Additional delivery
An additional class kiha70 vehicle was delivered by modifying a class kiha58 vehicle in 1990. This vehicle differs from former class kiha70-1 vehicle in having a mini gallery displaying some works of art exhibition, etc. held in Yufuin instead of the buffet counter.
Modifications Many modifications were introduced to Kiha71 series in 2003. JR Kyushu displaced their superannuated prime movers and hydraulic transmission gears. Class kiha71 vehicles are powered a prime mover, SA6D125-HD-1, with a power output of 360PS and transmitted by a hydraulic transmission gear, DW14-1. Kiha70-1 vehicle is powered two prime movers, SA6D125-H-1A, with a power output of 300PS and transmitted by two hydraulic transmission gears, TACN22-1612A. on the other hand, kiha70-2 vehicle is powered by a prime mover, SA6D125-H, with a power output of 300 PS transmitting through a hydraulic transmission gear, TACN22-1603 and the other prime mover, DMF13HZ, with a power of 300PS transmitting through the other hydraulic transmission gear, TACN22-1603A. A diesel engine generator, DM83A, was displaced with PG-100E with a power output of 100 kVA.
Their passenger accommodation was also modified. The wall at the doorway
is covered with sliced veneers and the floor is paved with fire-resistant
woods. Japanese style toilets were changed into western style toilet employing
the vacuum toilet system. Class kiha71 vehicles are also equipped with
an additional western style woman only toilet. Kiha71-2 vehicle is also
equipped with a segregated smoking compartment additionally to make all
seating accommodation no-smoking. A mini gallery located in kiha71-2 vehicle
was a salon space having wooden high tables, wooden benches and a wooden
counter table. In buffet counter, fire-resistant woods are also applied
for the counter table, the floor and the walls. Two transverse seating
bays with a wooden centre table are additionally located next to the buffet
counter.
