E259eries
Type index

In 2009, JR East developed E259 series DC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains in order to displace former 253 series EMU used on the "Narita Express" intercity services to and from Narita International Airport. Their formation consists of 4 motored vehicles and 2 trailer vehicles. Retracting gangway connections on the end cars allow two sets to be coupled together to form 12-car formations.
The vehicle design incorporates double skin aluminum construction by means of introducing the friction stir welding (FSW) technology. They feature full active suspension on end cars and yaw dampers between all cars in order to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 130km/h. The analog indicators of the driver's cab were changed into the liquid crystal display.
Traction motors are AC 3-phase asynchronous motors, MT75B, rate at 140kW based on those of E531 series. Traction systems, which consist of the converter and 2-level AVAF inverter, drive 8 traction motors of MohaE259 and MohaE258. In emergency, traction systems for either motored car can be cut off. E259 series feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake. Commands of service braking are carried by TIMS. Braking on formation basis by TIMS realizes regeneration rate improvement.
They feature DT77/TR262, desinged based on those of E257 series, adopting the bolster-less air suspension, and axle arm type journal box supporting system. Bogies adopt the yaw dampers to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 130km/h.
All seats are adjustable reclining. 1st class vehicles have 2+2 abreast seating and seat pitch is 1160mm and standard class vehicles have 2+2 abreast seating and seat pitch is 1020mm. Electric power outlets are provided at each seat. MohaE259-500 vehicles are equipped with wheelchair spaces, and KuroE259 vehicles are equipped with a multi purpose room and a universal access toilet. Luggage storage areas feature lockable straps for security, and security cameras are fitted in vestibule and luggage areas. Four ceiling-mounted passenger information display units are provided in each car. These feature two 17-inch screens on each side, displaying information in four languages (Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese).
E259 series are now used on "Narita Express" intercity services to and from Narita International Airport.
