Pre-Production AC/DC dual voltage locomotive, EH500-901, was developed
by JR Freight for use on Tokyo to Hokkaido freight services in 1997, displacing
superannuated EF65, ED75, and ED79.
EH500 has as same performance as double-headed ED75. The traction system features 3-step AVAF (Adjustable Voltage Adjustable Frequency) inverter control adopting IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor). Each traction system controls 2 AC 3-phase asynchronous motors, FMT4, rated at 565kW. Bogies features bolster-less air spring and axle arm type journal box supporting system. Bogies and traction motors are same as those of EF210.
Mass-production type of EH500 was delivered in 2000. They differ from the
pre-production type in having 2 main transformers in place of 1 main transformer.
Bodies are higher than that of pre-production EH500-900. Profiles of the
roof are changed into flat. EH500-3 onwards introduced minor improvements,
including the change of headlights location and applying "Kintaro"
logos on the side of the body.
Now EH500 locomotives replaced with superannuated ED75 locomotives and
used on Tokyo to Hokkaido freight services. EH500 is also introduced Kanmon
tunnel located between the Main Island of Japan and Kyushu Island from
2007. |
