JR Freight developed a prototype of EH800 AC electric locomotive since
the undersea Seikan tunnel will be shared with the Hokkaido Shinkansen
from 2016.
Since the voltage of the overhead power supply raise from the conventional lines of 20kV to the standard Shinkansen power supply of 25kV, EH800 can be operated at overhead power supply voltages of both 25 kVAC (shared line section) and 20 kVAC (conventional line section). Although maximum power output is same as that of EH500, power output is reduced to 80% in the conventional line section.
EH800 has two-unit body. LCX antennas are fitted on the both sides of the
body of the northern end. New single-arm type current collectors support
the deviation between the centre of the truck and the overhead line in
the shared line section.
EH800 locomotives are equipped with digital automatic train control (ATC)
system called the DS-ATC for the shared line section and ATS-SF for the
conventional line section. Their transformer and vacuum breaker are available
for 25 kVAC. Their traction system base on that of EH500 is FMPU17. FMPU17
does not switch main circuit but limits the power output for each voltage.
Traction motors, FMT4A are same as those of other locomotives.
Bodies, FD7, differ from those of other locomotives in having L-shaped guide for derailment prevention, as well as axle temperature sensors and vibration sensors. EH800 locomotives don't adopt rheostatic brake like EH500but regenerative brake, since the regenerative power is absorbed without generating regenerative invalidation in AC electrified line.
Mass-product locomotives began to be delivered from 2014 and gradually
replace ED79 currently used to haul freight services through the tunnel.
