JR West introduced 100-3000 series from 1988. 100-3000 series differ from
the 100-0 series, which were built by JR Central, in having 4 bilevel trailer
car in the centre of the formations. One trailer car was a restaurant car.
The other bilevel cars had open-plan first class accommodation on the upper
deck, and 2+2 abreast standard class accommodation on the lower deck. All
end cars were changed into motored. Each first class seat was fitted with
LCD TV monitor to enjoy video programme.
100-3000 series adopted weak field control to prepare 270km/h running operation.
Traction gear ratio was also changed. But maximum service speed was limited
at 220km/h (230km/h on Sanyo Shinkansen) considering the noise pollution.
Destination indicator panels were changed into LED.
While 100-3000 series were used exclusively on "Hikari" services,
in later years, 100-3000 series vehicles used on "Hikari" services
were gradually displaced with 500 series or 700 series. In 2002, 100-3000
series were withdrawn from "Hikari" services.
Surplus 100 series vehicles were reformed into 4 or 6 car formations. End
cars were reclassified into -5000 sub-series. JR West remodeled the powered
intermediate cars into powered end cars by transplanting the cab sections
of surplus non-powered G set cars in order to fill up insufficient end
cars, and classified them into the 121-5050 and 122-5050 series.
These 4 or 6 car formations were refurbished with 2+2 abreast seating using former West Hikari seats or first class seats. All of them were be repainted into the new JR West "fresh green" Kodama livery. They were withdrawn in 2012 by replacement with 700-7000 series and N700-7000 series. |
