N700S-0 series are mass-production type of N700S series. They are formed 14 motored intermediate cars and 2 trailer end cars. JR Central began to delivere N700S-0 seeries from 2020.
The double-skin aluminum construction incorporated into the vehicle design for light weight achieves both silent cabin room and lower cost. The long nose section design is closely based on N700 series, differing in having edges on the both right and left sides of the nose in order to reduce tunnel micro atmospheric pressure wave, wind noise, running resistance, and vibration of the rear car by rectifying traveling air. They employ different shape LED headlamps and a slightly different blue stripe design on the sides. "N700 Supreme" logos are applied on each odd-numbered car.
Bogies future bolster-less air suspension and coil spring with cylindrical laminated rubber. Although the construction of the existing bogie frame was two exterior parts stuck together horizontally with additional strengthening inside, bogies of N700S series feature welded U-shaped member and under plate unified with axle spring base, realizing the light weight. The reduction of the welding points improves their productivity. Some of gear units incorporate double helical gears to reduce thrust load against bearing and to run more smoothly and quietly. Although N700 series adopted continuous variable semi-active dumpers, 1st class cars of N700S series adopted active suspension for further improved ride quality. N700S series trains have a tilting of up to one degree allows the trains to maintain 270 km/h even on 2,500 m radius curves.
VAFD inverter traction system employs Silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET, providing advantages for fast, high-temperature and/or high-voltage devices to supply high frequency and high current. Their traction system is made smaller and lighter by introducing traveling air cooling technology. Light and small traction motors are adopted by employing six-stator-pole type, realizing light weight under keeping high power output. Transformer employs thin windings and small iron core to reduce weight and size. These new technologies realize optimized underfloor equipment layout to allow the same standard design to be used to produce 12-car and 8-car trainsets in the future. The optimization is intended to make the train more flexible. This optimization further allows Toshiba SCiB LTO batteries to be installed so that the train can operate at low speed in the event of a disruption to overhead power. Single-arm current pickup with short lower arm employ flexible slide plate to improve trackability and life. The insulators of the current pickup are reduced to two, realizing light-weight.
Interior layout and accommodation are very similar to that of N700 series in the standard layout of 2+2 seating in first class, and 2+3 in standard class. Seating pitch is 1040mm in standard class and 1160mm in first class. Each seat has AC power outlets. The outlets of air conditioners are unified with the side wall panel to enlarge the size of outlets, equalizing the temperature in the passenger saloons. The passenger saloons adopt LED indirect lighting. When the train is approaching the station, LED light up the luggage rack to prevent from lost articles. Passenger information device is changed into large LCD passenger information screens. N700S-0 series are equipped with an extra space for storing the luggage, having safety lock for preventing baggages by use of authentication of smart card.
N700S-0 series entered the revenue services from 1 July, 2020.
