JR Shikoku developed class 1000 a single-car diesel multiple unit (DMU) train to replace superannuated and low-performance former DMU train in 1990.

Lightweight bolster-less bogies, S-DT57/S-TR57, are adopted. Vehicles are equipped with a motored bogie and a trailer bogie. The brake system is the electric command brake. Class 1000 vehicles are equipped with a traction engine, SA6D125-H rated at 400PS. are equipped with hydraulic transmission gears, DW14 in order to achieve high service speed at 110 km/h and high acceleration performance.
Passenger accommodation consists of a mixture of longitudinal bench seating on one side and transverse seating bays on the opposite side. The air conditioner is AU26 driven by the traction engine.
Toilets have been retro-fitted to some vehicles since February 2001. In 2008, some class 1000 vehicles were modified to make them compatible with newly delivered class 1500 DMU cars, and were reclassified as class 1200.
Class 1000 vehicles are used on the rural services of the Tokushima line and Dosan line.
