Type index

JR Hokkaido developed 721-1000 series and built from 1993. They differ from the former 721-0 series in adopting AVAF inverter traction systems. End motored cars were displaced with end trailer cars because of featuring high power ac 3-phase asynchronous traction motors, N-MT785A, rated at 215kW. Bogies were changed into N-DT721A and N-TR721A. Their bogies differ from those of 721-0 series in featuring the axle arm journal box supporting system and having yaw dampers to ensure smooth ride characteristics, giving a maximum services speed of 120km/h.
Brake registers are fitted on the roof because of adopting rheostatic brake such as 721-0 series.
Most of formations except the 1009F formation were increased to 6 cars from 2003 with the addition of extra type Saha721-4100 and Sha721-4200 intermediate trailer vehicles. 721-1000 vehicles coupled with Saha721-4100/4200 were classifies into 721-4000 sub-series. Saha721-4100/4200 vehicles differ from the former 721 vehicles in discontinuing vestibules and having the air curtains on doorways for preventing open-air coming in. The air conditioner was changed into N-AU722.
Now 721-4000 series are used on the "Airport" rapid services linking Otaru/Sapporo and New Chitose Airport.
