"Hokuetsu" intercity services

"Tsygaru" services linking Aomori and Akita
Background and overview
JR East refurbished 48 superannuated vehicles of 485-1000 series used on "Hatsukari" intercity services over the period from 1996 until 1999 and classified them into -3000 subseries.

Car body
The fibre-reinforced polymer cover is added on the front of the end vehicles and the obstacle deflector. The driver's cab is replaced with newly built one with a large, curved windscreen. Side windows of the standard class cabin are stretched 90mm downward and 15mm upward. The doors of class moha484-3000 located at the car's number 4 are widened for the wheelchair. The destination rollsign and the built-in classification headboard are changed into LED displays. Their livery is white with yellow accent on the front, blue violet skirting and a dark blue boundary between a white part and blue violet skirting.

Ancillary equipments
A motor generator located under the floor is replaced with an auxiliary power unit, SC54, with a power output of 210kVA, and an air compressor located under the co-driver's position is replaced with MH3099-C2500ML located under the floor.

Accommodation
Reclining seating for the 1st and standard class is displaced with new one. The decorative cover is fitted on the tip of the overhead luggage rack. The air conditioning duct is fitted above the ceiling in order to improve interior design and the outlets of cool air is changed into slit shape. The toilets are changed into western style vacuum toilet constructed by fibre-reinforced plastic. A wash room is replaced with a flush urinal featuring prefabricated construction. In addition, class moha484-3000 vehicles located at car's number 4 are equipped with a universal access toilet and a multi-purpose room located toward front of the passenger room, and a flush urinal where the existing Japanese toilet was located. The Japanese style toilet and the washroom in class moha485-3000 vehicles located at the car's number 5 are displaced with a catering room and a payphone room.

Additional delivery
JR East delivered 2 nine-car sets of 485-3000 series for "Hakutaka" intercity services linking Echigo-Yuzawa and Kanazawa via Hokuhoku line of Hokuetsu Express, and 5 six-car sets for "Inaho" and "Hokuetsu" intercity services to Kami-Nuttari depot over the period from 1996 until 2000. Their livery is white with marine blue skirting, plane green accent on the front, and a dark blue boundary between a white part and marine blue skirting.

Operations
They entered "Hatsukari" intercity services in 1996. However, "Hatsukari" services were discontinued with the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen extension to Hachinohe, and they entered "Hakucho" intercity services linking Hachinohe and Hakodate. At the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen extension to Shin-Aomori, 4-car sets were used on "Tsugaru" intercity services linking Aomori and Akita. However, they used on "Tsugaru" services were eventually displaced with E751 series. At the opening of Hokkaido Shinkansen, "Hakucho" services were discontinued, and 485-3000 series used on "Hakucho" services were completely scrapped.
On the other hand, 2 nine-car sets of 485-3000 series including 2 saro481 vehicles entered "Hakutaka" intercity services linking Echigo-Yuzawa and Kanazawa over the period from 1997 until 1998. 5 six-car sets also entered for "Inaho" and "Hokuetsu" intercity services over the period from 1996 until 2000. Train sets used on "Hakutaka" intercity services were displaced with 683-8000 series in 2005 and converted to 6-car train sets to enter "Inaho" and "Hokuetsu" services. A 6-car train set executing "Inaho" service was derailed, overturned by strong winds, and eventually scrapped. In addition, train sets used on "Inaho" services were displaced with E653-1000 series EMU in 2014. Subsequently, "Hokuetsu" services were discontinued at the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Kanazawa. Finally, 485-3000 series vehicles used on rapid services linking Niigata and Itoigawa were completely scrapped because rapid services were discontinued in 2017.
