Although JR Hokkaido planed to deliver extra 789-0 series vehicles to additional
capacity for "Super Hakucho" intercity services following the
opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen extension to Shin-Aomori, an extra auxiliary
2 car formation was remodeled from surplus 785-0 series vehicles and classified
into 785-300 series.
A motored intermediate car, Moha785-300, was remodeled from a motored end
car, Kumoha785 by blocking up the front window and one of the sliding doors
with a steel and fitting the awning adapter at the original cab end. A
trailer end car, Kuha784, was remodeled by closing a through door at the
cab end.
The totally enclosed motors, N-MT785X, rated at 225kW are tentatively featured.
A traction system was changed into the new 3-level PWM converter and 2-level
PWM inverter, N-CI789-4. Regenerative brake is available until 0km/h. Brake
resistors are removed because of the change of brake system. A current
collector was changed into N-PS789 designed for the undersea Seikan Tunnel.
The equipments of the driver's cab were changed into the same ones as those
of 789-0 series.
Now 785-300 series are used on the "Super Hakucho" intercity services linking Shin-Aomori and Hakodate. |
