E653-1100 series electric multiple unit (EMU) trains entered services in 2015 on "Shirayuki" intercity services between Niigata and Arai with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Kanazawa. E653-1100 series were remodeled from surplus E653-0 series vehicles, which had been used on "Fresh Hitachi" intercity services linking Ueno and Iwaki, by displacement to E657 series EMU.
Their formation consists of 2 motored vehicles and 2 trailer vehicles. E653-1100 series EMU trains required heavy protection against snow common in Niigata areas, including shrouding of underfloor equipment and air suspension of bogies and the revision of windscreen wiper and journal box. The wheelchair space is introduced to KuhaE652-1100 vehicles. These sets will receive a new livery consisting of ivory white with vermillion and blue stripes intended to evoke an image of the sunset over the Sea of Japan. The automatic jumper coupler fitted on the front end was discontinued.
Now E653-1100 series EMU trains are used on "Shirayuki" intercity services.
