DE15 1534
The Class DE15 is a five-axle C-B wheel arrangement diesel-hydraulic locomotive as a self-propelled snowplough unit developed by Japanese National Railways (JNR) in 1967, since former DD15 diesel-hydraulic locomotive as a self-propelled snowplough unit has heavy axle load and troublesome mounting/dismounting of snowplough.
DE15 was developed from the Class DE10 locomotive design, with the addition of separate two-axle snowplough units at either end. The snowplough units could be attached and detached relatively easily, allowing the locomotives to be used for shunting and other duties outside the winter periods.
DE15-0 locomotives are equipped with a steam heating boiler (SG). Their prime mover is DML61ZA rated at 1250PS. The main body has a C0 bogie, DT132A and a B0 bogie, DT131E. The snowplough unit has a trailer bogie, TR108. They were designed for clearing double-track lines. Initially, the locomotives operated with only one snowplough unit.
The prime mover of DE15-1000 built from 1971 was changed into DML61ZB uprated to 1350PS. DE15-1500 locomotives were built with uprated DML61ZB prime mover and concrete ballast in place of the steam heating boilers for freight use. DE15-1500 built after 1976 has snowplough units at both ends and designed for clearing double-track lines. C0 bogies of DE15-1000 and DE15-1500 built from 1972 were changed into DT141.
Earlier DE15 locomotives with a snow plough unit were modified with snowplough units at both ends.
After the splitting of the former JNR into new privatized JR companies in April 1987, JR Hokkaido JR East, JR Central and JR West received DE15 locomotives. Now superannuated DE15 locomotives were gradually withdrawn by the introduction of snow clearing motor cars or Kiya143 diesel multiple unit vehicles.
