ED75 locomotives represented new standard alternating-current locomotive type. Mercury-arc rectifier adopted by early alternating-current locomotives was gradually replaced with the silicon rectifier because of the requiring heavy maintenance. But the silicon rectifier was inferior to mercury-arc rectifier, which apply phase control, in adhesion performance. In order to solve this problem, introduction of the magnetic amplifier and the silicon rectifier realized phase control. As a result, alternating-current locomotive adopting silicon rectifier realized the same high adhesion performance as locomotives adopting mercury-arc rectifier. DT129 bogies give higher adhesion performance mechanically. Traction motors are MT52 developed as the standard motors for direct-current and alternating-current locomotives
ED75 locomotives adopt the multiple-locomotive control system and are equipped with corridor connection doors at each end of the body. The electric power supply for the passenger car's heater is provided.
The mass production types of ED75 were delivered from 1964. They differ from the initial pre-production types in adopting different types of the rectifier, the air blast circuit breaker, and the transformer. -51 onwards are equipped with the visors above the windscreen. Then -101 onwards are discontinued the visor.
Although ED75 locomotives have been used for the passenger and freight trains in Tohoku region, many ED75 locomotives were displaced with the distributed traction passenger trains. Then superannuated ED75 locomotives are replaced with EH500 locomotives. Now ED75 locomotives are gradually decreasing.
