Background and overview
Japan National Railways (JNR) improved ED76 locomotives to haul 10000 series
high speed freight wagons and 20 series intercity sleeper coaches in 1970.
They were classified into -1000 subclass.
Traction unit and auxiliary equipments
There are noticeable differences over former class ED76 0. They are equipped
with an electromagnetic brake command line, a main pneumatic reservoir
pipe, and a pressure intensifier. The circuit breaker for alternate current
is changed into a vacuum circuit breaker, CB106. Current collectors are
changed into cross-arm type, PS102C.
ED76 1011 onward built for the additional capacity of high-speed freight services and intercity sleeper services in Kyushu in 1973 are differ from former ED76 1000 locos in having a cab ventilation grill and ornamental silver painted stipes on each end of the body, and discontinuing jumper couplers, KE59, for 20 series sleeper coaches. Their tap changer is changed into LTC-3A.
ED76 1015 onward built for the start of electrified Nippo line between
Minami-Miyazaki and Kagoshima employ unit assembled side windows of the
driver's cab for the protection against volcanic ash from Sakurajima which
is an active stratovolcano. Their traction motors are changed into MT52B.
Operations
ED76 1000 locomotives had been used for hauling 10000 series high speed
freight wagons and 20 series intercity sleeper coaches. Then both 1000
and ED76 0 locomotives used on the intercity sleeper services and freight
services all over Kyushu.
At the splitting of JNR into the privatized JR companies, JR Freight received all of ED76 1000 locomotives in 1987.
Modification and refurbishment
The refurbishment programme commenced from 1995 involved replacing the
traction motors, MT52C, employing the roller bearing for the rotor shaft.
Superannuated ED76-0 locomotives are gradually replaced with EH500 locomotives.
Latest operation status
ED76-1000 locomotives are now used of the freight services all over Kyushu. |
