JR West developed the experimental train, 500-900 series to study the feasibility of 350 km/h services between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. 500-900 series were named "WIN350" standing for "West Japan Railways Innovation for operation at 350 km/h".
All axles were motored for high-speed trial at over 350km/h. The unit formation consisted of 3 cars. Car's No. 2 and No.5 were equipped with the main transformers. The other vehicles were equipped with the VVVF inverter traction systems that control 300 kW 3-phase induction motors. Bodies were constructed by the aluminum alloy such as 300 series. The body cross-section was reduced to 3.3 m high. The streamlined nose sections featured different designs at each end. Some vehicles were equipped with no windows to study the noise caused by the influence of the difference in level between the window and the body surface.
Tested 3 different bogies adopted different journal box supporting systems. Active control and tilt system were tested. Mass production model of 500 series was designed based on the result getting the trial on WIN350.
WIN350 was withdrawn in 1996 and an end vehicle was preserved at the Maihara large-scale wind tunnel test facility located near Maibara station, and the other was preserved at Hakata general depot.
