	JR West built 700-7000 series vehicles to displace superannuated 0 series vehicles used on Sanyo Shinkansen "West Hikari" services linking Shin-Osaka and Hakata. 700-7000 series entered new limited-stop Sanyo Shinkansen Hikari Railstar services from 2000. 700-7000 series adopt 3-step inverter traction system that is similar to 700-0 series. Although traction motors are rated at 275kW like 700-0 series, gear ratio is different. Bogies are same bolster-less bogies, the journal box supporting system of which is axle arm type, as 500 series. Two single-arm type current collectors of a same design to 700-0 series are fitted. LED destination indicator panels are fitted on the side of the body instead of destination indicator screens adopted by 700-0 series. 700-7000 series trains consist of the three non-reserved standard class cars and the five reserved standard class. No first class is provided. Although the non-reserved standard class has the normal 2+3 seating, the reserved standard class has club class style 2+2 seating. Seat pitch is 1040mm throughout. There are also 4 four-seat compartments in car No. 8. Livery is similar to that of 500 series. "Rail Star" logos are applied to the side of bodies. 12 units of 700-7000 series were built by JR West in 1999. Then additional 3units were built. Now 700-7000 series are used on limited-stop Sanyo Shinkansen Hikari Railstar services linking Shin-Osaka and Hakata.
