JR East developed the next generation DC electric multiple unit (EMU) commuter train classified into E235-0 series, incorporating several new technologies, and delivered pre-production set in 2014.
They are formed 6 motored cars and 5 trailer cars. The SahaE235-4600 vehicles (car 10) were modified from former E231-500 series SahaE231-4600 vehicles except 2 sets.
The vehicle design incorporates light weight stain-less steel construction, featuring guide plates against the offset collision. They feature vertical green stripes running through the doors, as opposed to the former usage of horizontal stripes to allow easier identification of the line at platforms. Each car has four pairs of sliding doors on each side of the body. Door operating equipment, TKE156, is driven by the electricity, featuring rack and pinion type gearing device.
Adjustable Voltage Adjustable Frequency (AVAF) inverter traction system features Silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET in order to reduce electricity consumption and to realize regeneration rate improvement. Traction motors, MT79, rated at 140 kW are controlled on truck basis. E235-0 series don't adopt married pair unit system but single unit system. All motored cars are equipped with a traction system. E235-0 features the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake. Commands of service braking are carried by INTEROS. INTEROS incorporated integrated control featuring high speed Ethernet communication, and WiMAX in order to transmit the information of vehicle condition in real time, compared to distributed control on E231 series. MohaE235-0 vehicles are equipped with a single arm type current collector, PS33H. Only car No 6 of MohaE235-0 vehicles are equipped with another backup current collector.
They feature DT80/TR264/TR264A bogies (excepting SahaE235-4600), adopting the bolster-less air suspension, and axle arm type journal box supporting system. Bogies prepares the yaw dampers.
Seating is longitudinal throughout, with priority seating at one end of each car, and a wheelchair/stroller space at the opposite end. The passenger saloons use LED lighting. The luggage rack height was generally 1,678 mm with a height of 1,628 mm in the end cars and in priority seating areas. Paper advertisements inside the cars are completely abolished, replaced by 18 LCD colour advertising screens in each car. E235-0 series are equipped with an air conditioner, AU726, rated at 55,000kcal/h. The air conditioner control system can predict the number of passengers at upcoming stations and adjust the temperature for passenger comfort.
The first full-production standard set was delivered in 2017. There are some noticeable differences over pre-production set. The luggage rack height is standardized as 1,628 mm throughout. The handrails next to seats in the full-production sets have an embossed surface. By following feedback from advertising companies and users, full-production sets include traditional paper advertisements in addition to the LCD screens.
The pre-production unit of E235-0 series underwent extensive test running from March, 2015, and entered the revenue services on the Yamanote line on 30 Nov., 2015. But it was taken out of services later the same day following faults with door-close indicators and problems stopping at the incorrect position along the station platform. Test running on the Yamanote Line resumed from 27 December. The train returned to revenue service on the Yamanote Line on 7 March 2016. The full-production standard set entered the revenue services from 2017.
E235-0 series are used on the Yamanote commuter services, replacing the E231-500 series in use since 2002.
