Background and overview
In 2020, JR East developed suburban DC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains,
E235-1000 series, from the earlier E235-0series used on Yamanote line commuter
services replacing the E217 series used on the Sobu rapid services and
the long-distance services of the Yokosuka line. They formed as eleven-car
sets consisting of 6 powered cars and 5 trailer cars, and 4-car sets consisting
of 2 powered cars and 2 trailer cars.
Car body
They have 2950mm wide body, incorporating unpainted bead-less light weight
stainless construction. Their gutters are fitted inside the side wall of
the body. 1st class bilevel cars have 2900mm wide body to reduce the slant
angle of the lower body for securing the lower saloon width. They have
the double blue and cream waistline and headline bands running the length
of each car below and above the windows as E217 series. 1st class vehicles
are equipped with two 810mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding doors on
each side of the vehicles. Wide fixed windows are fitted between the doors
and small fixed windows per each seat are fitted at the one-story section
of each end of the car. Standard class vehicles are equipped with four
1300mm wide double-leaf automatic sliding doors on each side of vehicles.
Drop windows are fitted between the doors and fixed windows are at the
end of the vehicles. Door operating equipment is driven by the electricity,
featuring rack and pinion type gearing device. Full colour LED destination
indicator panels and loudspeakers, which a train conductor uses in order
to guide passengers waiting at a station, are fitted on each side of the
body. All end cars are equipped with the automatic jumper coupler to ease
rush-up operations. Two air conditioners, AU742, rated at 20,000kcal/h
for 1st class bilevel cars are fitted on the roof at both end of the body.
An air conditioner, AU737, rated at 50,000kcal/h for standard class cars
is fitted on the centre of their roof. The air conditioner control system
can predict the number of passengers at upcoming stations and adjust the
temperature for passenger comfort. No ventilators are fitted.
Bogies
Motored bogies are DT80/DT80A and trailer bogies are TR273/TR273A/TR273B/TR273C,
featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension, axle arm type journal
box supporting system, the single link traction device and the yaw dampers
to ensure smooth ride characteristics even at 120km/h. TR246C bogies are
prepared to fitting anti-rolling stabilizer. Motored bogies employ single
tread brake device and trailer bogies employ both single disk brake device
and single tread brake device.
Traction unit and auxiliary equipments
Class mohaE235 and class mohaE234 vehicles are equipped with a 2-step variable
frequency drive traction system, SC104A employing Silicon carbide (SiC)
MOSFET. Their traction system controls 4 AC asynchronous traction motors,
MT79, with a power output of 140kW on truck basis. E235-1000 series don't
adopt married pair unit system but single unit system. All motored cars
are equipped with a traction system. The gear ratio is 7.07 to get high
traction force at starting. Class mohaE235 vehicles are also equipped with
a single arm current collector, PS33H. Only mohaE235-1300 vehicles are
equipped with another backup current collector. Class mohaE234 vehicles
are equipped with a motor driven reciprocating air compressor, MH3130-C1600F4,
under the floor. Class kuhaE234-1000, kihaE234-1000 and kuhaE235-1000 are
equipped with a duplex auxiliary power supply 3-step inverter, SC107A,
with a power output of 260kVA under the floor. Class mohaE234-1200 and
mohaE234-1300 are equipped with batteries, MB6, a DC-DC converter, SC122,
and a smoothing reactor, ICD43, to operate at low speed in the event of
a disruption to overhead power. E235-0 features the electric commanding
brake with regenerative brake. Commands of service braking are carried
by INTEROS. The end cars are equipped with the ATS-P signaling system and
prepared to be equipped with the wireless ATC signaling system, ATACS,
under the floor.
Accommodation
1st class cars have reclining seating with 970mm seating pitch, employing
a power outlet under the armrests as well as Wi-Fi. Standard class cars
have longitudinal seating throughout, with priority seating at one end
of each car, and a wheelchair/stroller space at the opposite end. Large
liquid-crystal displays are fitted used for providing passenger information
above the door header of the sliding doors. 1st class cars are also equipped
with LCD displays for providing passenger information on the wall. 18 LCD
colour advertising screens are fitted in each standard class car. Class
mohaE234-1200 and kuhaE234-1000/1100 are equipped with a universal access
toilet, and class saroE235-1000s are equipped with a western style toilet
and a washroom.
Operations
E235-1000 series entered the revenue services of the Sobu rapid services and the long-distance services of the Yokosuka line. E235-1000 series vehicles are now delivered to replace E217 series. E235-1000 series vehicles built in May 2021 onward differ from that only class kuhaE234-1000 and kuhaE235-1100 have an automatic jumper coupler.
Latest operation status
E235-1000 series are now used on the Sobu rapid services and the long-distance
