Background and overview
JR West had to deliver additional suburban dual voltage AC/DC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains for the start of electrified Nanao line between Tsubata and Nanao in 1991. JR West remodeled surplus 113-800 series into dual voltage AC/DC EMUs and renumbered into 415-800 series, featuring the protection against snow and coldness.

Modification
113-800 series operated as part of the 4-car consisting of 2 trailer end cars and 2 powered intermediate cars and 2-car formations consisting of 2 powered end cars were reformed into 3-car formations consisted for 415-800 series and 113-800 series in order both to reduce remolding cost and to increase the capacity of short formations of 113-800 series. Trailer end cars for 415-800 series were remodeled from ones equipped with an auxiliary power supply with a power output of 110kVA, supplying the power for air conditioners, in order to reduce the remodeling cost.
The roof section where the current collector was fitted was made lower to keep the distance for insulation against high voltage overhead line. The underframe of powered intermediate cars was remodeled for fitting a transformer. The current pickup was changed into a diamond shaped current collector having the protection against heavy snow, classified into PS16H. The door opening equipment was remodeled TK4 to use for the semi-automatic operation, controlled indirectly employing self-old. Most of 415-800 series vehicles were equipped with a centralized air conditioner, AU75. Some vehicles remodeled from non-airconditioned vehicles were equipped with distributed air conditioners, WAU102, for end cars and with a centralized air conditioner, AU75, for intermediate cars. Globular ventilators were changed into forced ventilators for the protection against snow. Their livery of end cars was applied with violet blue upper bodyside and gray lower bodyside separated by two wide and narrow oyster white stripe. The upper bodyside of the intermediate cars was changed into royal pink.
They adopted electromagnetic straight pneumatic brake with the rheostatic brake. The variable load valve and brake control device was employed because the total mass became heavier because of introducing a transformer and a rectifier for alternate current.
A transformer, a rectifier, an AC/DC changeover switch were transplanted from 485 series converted to direct current only. A pneumatic compressor and an auxiliary power supply were improved against pulsating current.

All ventilators on the roof were removed later. Buttons to open or close doors for semi-automatic sliding doors are added in 2000. Their livery was changed into red colour in 2010.

Scrap
Although 415-800 series had been used on the rural services of Hokuriku line and Nanao line, they had been completely replaced with 521-100 series EMU in 2021.
