Background and overview
From 2016, a refurbishment programme was commenced on 811-0 series. They were introduced various changes namely of their traction system featuring inverter control and classified into -1500 subseries.

Car body
Some changes were introduced to their bodies over 811-0 series. Their side windows were changed into tinted glass. Destination rollsigns were replaced with full-colour LED indicators. Refurbished sets retain the unpainted stainless-steel body with the white painted steel cab end. Their livery was changed into having blue waistline band with the outline characters, "Commuter Train 811", running the length of each car below the windows. "CT" logos also applied to the front gangway door and beside side doors. They also have a blue "Commuter Train 811" logo splashed in front as opposed to the older "NEW RAPID TRAIN 811" logo.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Their traction motors were changed into power-full 3-phase asynchronous motors, MT405K, with a power output of 150kW. Their traction system was replaced with the Variable-frequency drive (VFD) traction system, PC408KA for class kumoha810 and PC408KB for class moha811, which controls on truck basis, consisting of a 2-level converter and a 3-level inverter employing a silicon carbide-based MOSFET. Their traction transformer was updated to TM411K. The former lozenge-type current pickups were replaced with new single-arm current pickups. 811-1500 series feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake to zero speed.

Accommodation
Passenger accommodation is changed into longitudinal bench seating throughout to provide increased overall capacity and relieve overcrowding on the line, and LED lighting is used throughout. The fabric of their seating features the image of traditional textile in Kyushu. A LED display for providing passenger information displays in zigzags and door chimes are fitted above the door header of the sliding doors. Straps were fitted throughout their body. The toilet of class kuha811 is changed into a universal access toilet. Their end vehicles are also equipped with a wheel chair space. The intermediate veheicles remodeled after 2019 are also equipped with a wheel chair space and classified into -2000 subseries.

Latest operation status
811-1500 series are now used on the rapid services and ordinary services of Kagoshima, Nippo, and Nagasaki lines.
