Background and overview
JR Kyushu developed rural AC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains, 817-2000 series, to replace superannuated 717 series EMU trains used on Kagoshima region. Their accommodation was changed into longitudinal bench seating throughout to provide increased overall capacity and relieve overcrowding. 6 two-car sets consisting of a powered vehicle and a trailer vehicle were delivered in 2012.

Car body
The double-skinned aluminum alloy construction is incorporated into the vehicle design. The tempered glass covering the front of the cab section is changed into corrugated aluminum alloy plate painted in black and their body is painted in white. Their cab end has a gangway door and an automatic gangway connection device to ease rush-up operations. Door operating equipments, TK404K, with flashing alarm lamps while door opening/closing are fitted above the door header of the sliding doors. A 3000 mm wide and 1000 mm high large fixed window is fitted between sliding doors. They are equipped with an air conditioner, AU407KB rated at 42,500kcal/h on their roof.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Their traction system was changed into PC405K featuring truck basis control to keep on moving while the traction system is failed. PC405K consists of a 2-level PWM converter, a pair of 3-level Variable-frequency drive (VFD) employing Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT), and a brake chopper reactor to enable regenerative braking while travelling at dead section and controls 4 asynchronous traction motors, MT401KA, with a power output of 150kW. Class kumoha817-2000 vehicles are equipped with a traction transformer, TM409K-H, featuring natural cooling under their floor and a single-arm current pickup, PS401K, on their roof. Class kuha816-2000 vehicles are equipped with a motor driven rotary-screw air compressor, MH1092-SC1100K, and a high-power ancillary power supply unit, SC405K, employing thyristor/diode hybrid bridge rectifier and IGBT with a power output of 15kVA under their floor. They feature the electric commanding brake with regenerative brake and holding brake, featuring brake control of trailer priority.

Accommodation
Passenger accommodation consists of longitudinal bench seating with two stanchions to divide seating into three-four-three-seater having 440 mm wide per person throughout to provide increased overall capacity and relieve overcrowding. The seat and backrest are made of fire-resistant wood and have cushions covered with fabric. Seats located next to the stanchions have a headrest. LED displays for providing passenger information are fitted in zigzags. Straps were fitted throughout their body. The passenger saloons use LED interior lighting. The ticket machine, which put the ticket indicating the boarding station, is prepared to put beside doorways at the end of their body. The fare LED display and the fare box are also prepared to fit behind the cab. Their cab is a full-size type and the control desk of the driver's cab is equipped with a one handle master controller operated by the left hand. A rubbish bin is fitted at the opposite side of the driver's cab.

Additional delivery
JR Kyushu delivered an additional two-car set in 2013.

Operations
They entered revenue services on Chikuhou and Sasaguri lines branded "Fukuhoku Yutaka" line in 2012. They are now used on the rapid and regional services of Fukuhoku-Yutaka line.
