Background and overview
In 1991, JR Kyushu developed two-car diesel multiple unit (DMU) train, kiha200 series, in order to provide additional capacity and shorten the journey time for the unelectrified Chikuhou and Sasaguri lines. The standard formation of kiha200 series is 2-car set consisting of a class kiha200-0 vehicle with a Japanese toilet and a class200-1000 vehicle without a toilet.

Car body
Bodies constructed by steel have 2994mm wide body and gangwayed cab end. Their livery is JR Kyushu red. They incorporate pairs of large windows. Some windows can be opened. They are equipped with 3 double-leaf semi-automatic stepped sliding doors, a pair of drop or fixed windows between the doors on each side of the vehicles. Door operating equipments, TK102, are fitted above the door header of the sliding doors. An exhaust pipe of prime movers is fitted at the end plate outside to widen their passenger saloon as much as possible. Destination roll-signs are fitted on the body. They employ a prime mover driven air conditioner, AU604K, rated at 20,600kcal/h and a self-powered air conditioner, AU605K, rated at 20,600kcal/h. Two indoor units are fitted on their roof and two outdoor units are fitted under their floor. No ventilator is fitted on their roof. They employed the tight lock coupler. The automatic jumper coupler is ready to be fitted.

Bogies
The kiha200 series are equipped with DT600K for powered and TR600K for trailer featuring bolster-less secondary air suspension, rolled rubber spring journal supporting system, and the Z link traction device, developed based on DT53 powered bogie employed for Kiha183 series. Their bogie employs bow-shaped bogie frame to lower the fitting position of bolster suspension due to fit under the stepped doors. Powered bogies employ single tread brake device and trailer bogies employ both single disk brake device and single tread brake device.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Class kiha200 vehicles are powered by one diesel prime mover, DMF14HZA-4 of NIIGATA ENGINEERING CO., LTD., with a power output of 450PS to realize the maximum service speed at 110km/h. Their hydraulic transmission gear is R-DW4 featuring a jaw clutch and two-staged direct coupled range to achieve high mechanical efficiency of power transmission in spite of friction clutch. Kiha200 series feature the electric commanding brake with holding brake by exhaust gas brake.

Accommodation
Passenger accommodation is switchable transverse seating throughout with 910mm seating pitch. An ashtray is built in the seating armrest. The air conditioning duct is fitted above the ceiling and cross flow air blowers are ready to be fitted with. Straps are fitted at only the doorway. A trash box is fitted at the doorway located at the end of the vehicle. Kiha200-0 vehicles are equipped with a Japanese style toilet having a chemical holding tank.

Additional delivery
In 1991, Kiha200 series were delivered for the rapid services of Sasaguri and Chikuhou lines. Then they were delivered for the rapid services of Ibusuki-Makurazaki and Ohmura lines.

Modification
All ashtrays built in seating armrest were gotten rid of, since JR Kyusyu introduced absolutely no smoking on rapid and ordinary services. They were modified for use on conductor-less operation services from 2000. The ticket machine putting the ticket showing the boarding station is located at the boarding doorways. A fare display and a fare box are located behind the motorman's cab. Their livery operated in Nagasaki region is blue colour with "SEA SIDE LINER" logos applied to the side and front of the body.

Operations
Kiha200 series used on the rapid services of were relocated for the start of services of the newly electrified Sasaguri and Chikuhou lines. They are now used in the rapid and rural services of Nagasaki, Ohmura, Sasebo, Houhi, Kyudai and Ibusuki-Makurazaki lines.
