Background and overview
JR Kyushu modified kiha200 series DMU for additionally delivery for Houhi line, featuring low cost and conductor-less operation. These vehicles were classified into kiha200-100 series. The standard formation of kiha200-100 series is 2-car set consisting of a class kiha200-100 vehicle having a Japanese toilet and a class200-1100 vehicle having no toilet. Five 2-car sets were delivered in 1997.
Car body
Their air conditioners were changed into a prime mover driven air conditioner, AU607K, rated at 20,600kcal/h and a self-powered air conditioner, AU608KA, rated at 20,000kcal/h because of introducing new refrigerant, R132a.
Bogies
Their bogies were changed into DT600KA for powered and TR600KA for trailer employing corn-shaped multilayered rubber spring journal supporting system and tapered roller bearings in order to improve ride comfort.
Accommodation
Covers for fluorescent lights were left off and the quantity of fluorescent
lights is reduced. A LED display for providing passenger information and
a door chime are fitted above the door header of the sliding doors. They
are externally identical to the existing kiha200-0 series, with having
the ticket machine, which put the ticket indicating the boarding station,
a fare display and a fare box for conductor-less operation.
Operations
Kiha200-100 series had been used on accommodation trains of Houhi line between Kumamoto and Higo-Otsu. However, they were relocated and are now used on rural services of Houhi line between Higo-Otsu and Oita, Kyudai line, and Misumi line. |
