In 2011, JR Central developed Kiha25 diesel multiple unit (DMU) train type and delivered in order to transfer Kiha75 trains used on the rural services of Taketoyo line to provide additional capacity of "Mie" rapid services between Nagoya and Toba. Since JR Central had a plan to electrify Taketoyo line in 2015, JR Central considered the use on the rural services of Takayama Line of these trains.
The standard formation of kiha25-0 series is 2-car formation by a -0 sub-class vehicle with the toilet and a -100 sub-class vehicle without toilet. The original design is closely based on 313 series EMU trains, with the primary difference in preparing the step at the doorway. The vehicle design incorporates light-weight stain-less steel construction. The full colour LED destination indicators are fitted. The bogies, C-DT67/C-TR255, use a bolster-less design, adopting 2-axle drive.
Kiha25-0 vehicles are equipped with 1 traction engines, C-DMF14HZD of Cummins
INC., US, rated at 450PS, a vehicle and are equipped with the direct coupled
range four-staged hydraulic transmission gears, C-DW23 in order to achieve
high acceleration performance and better fuel consumption. Since the generators
for auxiliary power is driven by the traction engines, and can supply 440VAC
such as electric trains, electric system is same as EMU trains. The brake
system is the electric command brake, incorporating the engine braking.
Seating accommodation consists of switchable transverse seating and longitudinal bench seating at the ends of cars of Kiha25-100. Kiha25 vehicles feature semi-automatic side doors, in consideration of use in the Kosei line. Passengers can open or close doors manually by pushing buttons. Kiha25-0 vehicles are equipped with a universal access toilet and a wheelchair space.
As for the device of driving cab, one handle master controller operated
by the left hand was adopted. The fare LCD display and the fare box are
located behind the motorman's cab.
After the Taketoyo line was electrified in 2015, Kiha25-0 veheicles were
introduced to the rural services of Takayama line and Taita line in order
to replace remaining former JNR-era DMUs, including Kiha40, Kiha47, Kiha48.
At this time, the steps at the doorway were fitted.
Now Kiha25-0 DMU vehicles are used on the rural services of Takayama line and Taita line. |
