In 2014, JR Central delivered Kiha25-1000 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) vehicles in order to replace superannuated Kiha40 series used on the rural services of Takayama line and Taita line. Their body construction is that the pressed stainless sheet and the outside sheet are combined and those sheets themselves keep the strength, giving flush body sides. Kiha25-1000 vehicles incorporated steps at the doorway because they run on the lines of which platforms are low. They have also cushions on the front-end skirts to prevent damage from collisions with deer. Seating accommodation are changed into longitudinal throughout. They feature interior LED lighting. Kiha25-1000 vehicles are equipped with Body Vibration Detector (BVD).
Now Kiha25-1000 DMU trains are used on the rural services of Takayama line, Taita line, Kisei line, and Sangu line.
