183-800 series in JR West livery


Background and overview
JR West had to deliver additional suburban dual voltage AC/DC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains for the start of electrified Nanao line between Tsubata and Nanao in 1991. JR West removed the AC electric equipments from 485 series EMU used on "Kita Kinki" intercity services which run in only the DC electrified lines to modify 113-800 series DC electric multiple unit trains into AC/DC dual voltage EMU trains with them over the period from 1990 until 1994 and classified modified 485 series vehicles into 183-800 series.
In addition, 485 series vehicles were additionally converted to 183-800 series to replace kiha181 series diesel multiple unit trains used on "Asashio" intercity services at the start of the electrified San-in line between Sonobe and Fukuchiyama in 1996.
Furthermore, 485 series vehicles which were used on "Shirasagi" intercity services and replaced with 683-2000 series were converted to 183-800 series to introduce dividing train services that "Maizuru" services were coupled with "Tamba" and "Hashidate" services between Kyoto and Ayabe in 2003.

Car body
They have 2946mm wide body. Their body design incorporates lightweight shaped steel and pressed forming beam to realize a lightweight body, employing weatherproof high tension steel sheet for the skin and the roof. They are equipped with a 700mm wide single-leaf automatic sliding stepped doors, and wide fixed double-glazing windows aligned two class seating bays. Their door operating equipment, TK100B, is fitted on the door header of the sliding door. A destination rollsign is fitted on each side of the body. The vehicle livery for "Kita-Kinki" services is cream with red wide band around side windows and red narrow skirting. On the other hand, the vehicle livery for services on the San-in line is beige with brown wide band around side windows and a blue narrow band below the brown band.

Bogies
They are equipped with DT32A/DT32E bogies on the powered vehicles and TR69A/TR69E bogies on the trailers, featuring bellows or diaphragm air springs for the secondary suspension, the top of which is slanted in lateral direction, and pedestal type journal supporting system. Their secondary airbag suspension is not mounted to their body directly but mounted in the bogie unit. The parallel cardan drive with hollow shaft is applied for the power transmission device. The gear ratio is 3.50. Their brake rigging is a single tread brake for powered and double disk brake for trailer.

Traction unit and ancillary equipments
Eight series-wound brushed DC traction motors, MT54/MT54D, with a power output of 120kW are controlled by the armature-resistance traction control system, CS15E/CS15F, fitted to class moha183 intermediate powered vehicles. CS15F features holding breaking and free selectable speed control. Class moha484 intermediate powered vehicles are equipped with two current pickups, PS16H, connected with the cable bus on the roof. Trailer end vehicles are equipped with a motor generator, MH129-DM88, with a power output of 210kVA under the floor, and an air compressor, MH113B-C2000M under the co-driver's position. Class sashi481 vehicles are equipped with a motor generator, MH94-DM58, with a power output of 70kVA. They adopt electromagnetic straight air brake with the rheostatic brake with pressure intensifying braking over 110km/h to shorten braking distance.

Accommodation
The toilet and the washroom are not constructed fibre-reinforced plastic but metal wall plates for the incombustibility.

They are equipped with the automatic jumper coupler at the front to ease rush-up operations and 5 air conditioners, AU13EN, rated at 4500kcal/h on the roof. Bogies are WDT32 featuring diaphragm air springs for the secondary suspension, the top of which is slanted in lateral direction, and pedestal type journal supporting system. Eight series-wound brushed DC traction motors, MT54D, with a power output of 120kW are controlled by armature-resistance traction control system, CS15F, fitted to class kumoha183-200 powered end vehicles. They have 2+2 abreast reclining seating, R55C, with 1010mm seating pitch located on the floor raised 170mm from the aisle. The decorative cover is additionally fitted on the tip of the overhead luggage rack to improve appearance. Operations and withdrawal
183-800 series converted from 485 series were used on "Kitakinki" intercity services continuously. 183-800 series were additionally converted to displace kiha181 series diesel multiple unit used on "Asashio" intercity services at the start of electrified the San-in line between Sonobe and Fukuchiyama, and the Miyafuku line operated by Kitakinki Tango Railway between Fukuchiyama and Amano-Hashidate in 1996 and entered "Hashidate" services linking Kyoto and Amano-Hashidate, "Kinosaki" services linking Kyoto and Kinosaki, and "Tamba" services linking Kyoto and Fukuchiyama. They also entered "Monju" intercity services linking Shin-Osaka and Amano-Hashidate at the same time. Furthermore, they entered "Maizuru" intercity services linking Kyoto and Higashi-Maizuru at the start of electrified Maizuru line in 1999.
"Maizuru" intercity services started dividing train services coupled with "Tamba" and "Hashidate" services in 2003. However, train sets of 183-800 series used on dividing train services were displaced with 287 series in 2011. In addition, "Tamba" and "Monju" services were discontinued. Furthermore, remaining 183 series were displaced with 381 series, which had been used on "Kuroshio" intercity services and were completely scrapped in 2012.
