Kiha28 and Kiha58 introduced from 1968 were also prepared for fitting AU13
air conditioners. Kiha28 vehicles are prepared for fitting a diesel generator
rated at 70kVA in order to supply electricity to three air-conditioned
vehicles including itself. Curved surface windscreen of the driver's cab
is introduced. Their body becomes 60mm lower than that of earlier Kiha58
series in order to fit the air conditioners on the roof. These improved
Kiha58 series vehicles were classified into Kiha58-1100 sub-type and Kiha28-1000
sub-type for warm region, and Kiha58/Kiha28-1500 subseries for cold region.
JNR began to fit air conditioners onto not air-conditioned Kiha58 series.
An additional diesel generator rated at 70kVA in order to supply electricity
to three air-conditioned vehicles including itself was fitted to Kiha28
vehicles, which were classified into -3000/-3500 sub-type.
Although about 1,800 vehicles of Kiha58 series were delivered and used
all over Japan, Kiha58 series are decreasing because express services are
decreasing and Kiha58 series become too superannuated to use. The last
remaining vehicles were withdrawn in 2018. |
