Japanese National Railways (JNR) introduced ED79-0 AC electric locomotives operated on passenger freight services through the undersea Seikan tunnel between the main island, Honshu and Hokkaido island, converted from former ED75-700 AC electric locomotives in 1986. ED79-0 locomotives adopt the multiple-locomotive control system and are equipped with corridor connection doors at each end of the body for the operation on the freight services.
The gear ratio was reduced from the 4.44 of the original ED75 locomotives
to 3.38 in order to give the maximum service speed of 110 km/h. Traction
system of ED79-0 changed in to thyristor phase control system in order
to incorporate AC regenerative braking system for the operation on long
downward slope of the Seikan tunnel.
Their body is reused. The noticeable difference over previous ED75-700
is the resistor cover on the roof. Bogies are DT129 adopting the nose suspended
drive, same as those of ED75. The current collectors are PS103 cross-arm
type pantograph.
Safe system is ATC-L besides ATS-S for the operation through the undersea Seikan tunnel.
A current collector fitted at the Hakodate end was changed into PS79 single-arm
type in after years.
Although ED79-0 locomotives were used on the freight services, "Hokutosei",
"Nihonkai" and "Twilight Express" sleeper express services,
and "Kaikyo" rapid services, they are gradually displaced with
789-0 series EMU train and EH500 locomotives.
Now ED79-0 locomotives are now used on "Hokutosei", "Cassiopeia", "Twilight Express" night sleeper express services and "Hamanasu" express service. |
