In 1989, JR Freight developed and delivered ED79-50 AC electric locomotives to additional capacity for freight services through the undersea Seikan tunnel. The noticeable difference over previous ED79-0 is having the visors above the windscreens, which are slanted. They are finished from new in the then-new JR Freight livery of pale purple and two-tone blue, with maroon cab doors.
Now some ED79-50 locomotives remain in service and haul freight services between Higashi-Aomori and Goryokaku via Seikan tunnel in pairs. But they are now gradually replaced with EH800 AC dual voltage locomotives.
