EF200-901

After the splitting of the former Japanese National Railways (JNR) into the new privatized JR companies, freight traffic increased significantly. 1300t freight trains at 95km/h started from 1990 was inadequate to the demand. Moreover EF65 and EF66 engines built by JNR became superannuated. So JR Freight decided to build the pre-production type of EF200 electric engine pulling 1600 freight trains at 120km/h.
6 AC 3-phase asynchronous traction motors rated at 1000kW driven by AVAF traction system constituted by GTO thyristor give a high acceleration performance at high speed not to obstruct the EMU (Electric multiple unit) train services. Traction motors controlled by axle basis get enhanced adhesion by torque control while skidding.
The air intakes are located on the one side and the aisle is on the other side. "INVERTER HI-TECH LOCO" logos are applied on the side of the vehicle. Cab sections are covered with the steel having a thickness of 9mm in order to get enough axle load and to protect the cab. The air conditioners are fitted in the cab.
EF200 engines adopt Bogie truck with bolster-less. Traction devices are single link connection rod for end trucks and diagonal link connection rod for an intermediate truck. Traction motors are fitted on the trucks by featuring rag joints.
The brake system is the self-lapping electric command brake with rheostatic brake. Single arm pantographs are fitted for increased power motors.
EF200-901 vehicle is allocated at Suita Depot.
